Rice, James D., Jr. Age 91, of Dayton, passed away Dec. 21, 2022. He is survived by his wife of 71 years, Donna; his sons, Michael (Carolyn), Dave, Jim, and Doug (Janice); Cindy Rice; seven grandchildren, Todd (Carrie), Matt (Anna), Tim, Meredith (Nathan), Kevin (Megan), Andy, and Shelby; and eleven great-grandchildren. Also survived by his brother, Jack (Susan). Preceded in death by his parents, James Sr. and Hazel; his brother, Ronald; and his infant son, Jeffrey.
Jim served in the U.S. Navy for four years and retired from Ohio Bell after a 32-year career.
He was a caring and gentle man who provided a great example of how to be a loving husband, father, grandfather, and friend. He was beloved for his fun spirit and sense of humor.
Jim enjoyed giving of himself, whether it be volunteering at his church, at Carroll High School with friends, or in helping his sons, daughters-in-law, and grandchildren with their projects. Whether building playhouses or pitching in on home renovations, he was incredibly handy and the person to call in case of mechanical emergencies.
He also used his many talents to create one-of-a-kind treasures, making everything from baby cradles and bookshelves to desks, toys, carvings, and more. He even built his own boat!
Jim loved the outdoors, camping especially. He took Donna, his children, and grandchildren on many adventures in their RVs, making wonderful, lifelong memories. He also enjoyed traveling with his sons and their families. He managed to visit all 50 states and many parks, making friends everywhere he went. His travels also included tours of the Mediterranean and the Arctic Circle, courtesy of the U.S. Navy. Following his retirement, he enjoyed helping his sons with their work, spending time with his grandchildren and great-grandchildren, and also became a great cook.
Jim will be remembered for the love he gave and for the faith he lived.
Visitation will be Dec. 29, 2022 at 10 to 11 a.m. at Immaculate Conception Church, Smithville Road, Dayton, OH, with funeral to follow. Burial to be at Calvary Cemetery. Donations in lieu of flowers to Ohio’s Hospice of Dayton or Immaculate Conception Church of Dayton.
