Janet V. Bartell, 94, passed away peacefully on 8 May 2026 at the Springfield Masonic Community, Springfield, Ohio. She was born in early November 1931 to Vernon and Mildred (Jones) Weber in Cleveland, Ohio, where her father owned a tavern. She moved to Toledo as a teenager living first in West Toledo and then on South Detroit Ave, near Copeland. When she was growing up she wanted to be a teacher, but she did not have the opportunity to go to college. She graduated from Libbey High School in 1950. She and her future husband Dick met on a blind date, he was 2 years ahead at Libbey.
Janet and Dick were married in July 1954 at Salem United Church of Christ in Toledo. They lived almost all of their married life in in south Toledo. They shared many wonderful years at their home on Rocksberry Avenue and summer weekends at the family cottage on Long Lake near Reading, Michigan for over 60 years. She also enjoyed boating on the Maumee River and western Lake Erie on her in-law’s cabin cruiser. She worked at The Lucas County Bank in downtown Toledo prior to the birth of her son Rick and then later for many years at The Andersons main office, retiring from there in the early 1990s. She and Rick rode the Broadway-Beverly bus downtown to go shopping many times in the 1960s, always with a stop at Woolworth’s. She was very involved in the Northwest Ohio Chapter of the US Air Force Academy Parent’s Club for a number of years. Dick was a member of the Zenobia Shrine and they both enjoyed the Shrine’s dances and Super Bowl parties very much. She and Dick enjoyed 20 years of bowling with their good friends in a Mom & Pop bowling league at University Lanes. They celebrated their 60th wedding anniversary in 2014 with their family and friends with a Maumee River cruise.
Janet and Dick moved to Springfield Masonic Community in the fall of 2020, where she and Dick celebrated 68 years of marriage, until his passing in 2022.
She enjoyed sharing beers and laughter with friends and neighbors at her and Dick’s legendary weekly driveway gatherings.
Janet was a wonderful mom, grandma and friend, being always supportive and exemplifying the values she held dear, loving kindness, honesty, hard work and generosity. She was always ready to help out. She was generous to a fault and always made sure everyone was included, that everyone had a present to open at Christmas gatherings.
She was preceded in death by her parents and her husband. She is survived by her son Rick and daughter-in-law Melissa of Beavercreek, Ohio and grandchildren Nathan Bartell of Cookeville, Tennessee and Kate Gillespie (Ryan Gillespie) of Oakwood, Ohio.
