Family surrounded Doc at his home on February 10, 2015 when he departed at age 93 to rejoin Mary, his wife of 63 years. Born into a staunch Irish Catholic family in Buffalo NY, he was Jesuit-educated at Canisius High School and Canisius College. Joined the Army in May 1943, served in Europe and returned home with a Purple Heart for injuries sustained in combat. Continued his studies at Georgetown (history PhD) where he met his future wife Mary Parker of Sandusky OH. Took a position at the College of Steubenville (now Franciscan University of Steubenville – FUS) in the late 1940s and taught history there for the next 50+ years. The Carrigg family were members of St Peter’s Parish in Steubenville.
Doc was also involved in local politics (councilman, president of Council, County Treasurer), had many friends in the country-side, and held part-time jobs to make ends meet. His prodigious energy led him, in his late 40s, to buy a farm in western PA with the intent to work it using draft horses. (Apparently teaching full-time, working side jobs, politics and helping raise a family of 10 wasn’t enough!) And work it he did (mainly in summer-time) with the help of children, friends and neighbors over the next 25 years.
Doc was pre-deceased by his sister Margaret Mary Vargo, brother Paul and grandson Aaron Wohl and is survived by brother Richard, sisters-in-law Betty Stang and Ruth Parker, brother-in law Jack (Alyce) Parker; children Mike (Sandy), Anne (Chris) Cowan, John Jr (Bea), Chris (Katie), Miriam (Steve) Adams, Katie (Jimmy) Clark, Theresa (Walter) Araya, Tim (Tonja), Grace (Rob) Wohl, Dan (Therese); 40 grandchildren, 18 great-grandchildren; many nieces and nephews on both the Buffalo and Sandusky side.
Visitation will be Friday, February 20th, at Tobias Funeral Home 5pm – 7pm in Kettering OH (5471 Far Hills Ave). A funeral Mass will be on Saturday, February 21st at 10am at Emmanuel Catholic Church in downtown Dayton (149 Franklin Street).
