Dear Sweet Papa,
Not a day goes by that I don't think of you. I miss you deeply. I was so blessed and privledged to have had you as my Grandfather. Even though your in heaven with sweet Mama, I feel your love with me every day. The world is a little dimmer without the both of you in it. 

It was a delight in providing care for you. It was a way that I got to spend time with you, a real treat. I enjoyed hearing stories, watching Pride and Prejudice,our talks, checking your tomato plants and counting every single one on the vine and your love towards your great-granddaughter (she misses you dearly). I love you Mama and Papa. Heaven truly smiled when you entered God's Kingdom. Until we meet again.

To Miriam, Katie, Theresa & all Dr. Carrigg's family - what a loss! He was such a lovely, funny & inspirational teacher (and a really good and decent man, too!) I used so many of his teaching techniques in my history classes - often urging my students to indulge in wide outside reading! I read to them from classical texts, perching my glasses on my nose just like he did! 
Here's hoping he's chatting up Napoleon or exchanging opinions on Rommel with Patton!

I never knew Dr. Carrigg nor was I ever student of his nor was I ever the benefactor of such passionate filled history lessons that I have recently read about. I however, grew up within a short distance of the ring, ding, clang of the famous Carrigg "come home kids" bell.  I only knew Mr. Carrigg. I knew a family that had wonderful classy parents.

My memories of Mr. Carrigg are those of the man that had an accent (to me anyways),  a man who drove a Volkswagen Vanagon, a man that had a lot more kids than the Brady bunch, a man that limited his children's time in front of the TV.  I knew a man who was a way ahead of his time.   

While the age of our youth has long passed and we have become our parents, the memories and lessons learned of youth are still there; being used in our day to day lives.  The provider of such youthful lessons specifically recalled at times like these. 

Even though I was never an official student of Dr. Carrigg I was exposed to his values and morals and work ethic including and what I suspect now was a hint of his political views. His way of thinking made no sense to me then but make perfect sense now.Perhaps I was a student of Dr. Carrigg after all

Mike, Annie, John, Chris, Miriam, Katie, Theresa, Tim, Grace and Dan I am so sorry to hear of your fathers passing. While at this moment in time, it may appear of little consolation; please know the legacy your father has left reaches across the US and out into the far reaches of this world. Those who knew him, those who studied under him, those who worked side by side with him and yes, those who only knew him as Mr. Carrigg are far better off in their life balance for knowing your father.

What a truly great man, and the best of the greatest generation.  He brought history alive in his classroom with his unbridled enthusiasm.  I always smiled when I saw him with that distinctive gait, seemingly always totting an armful of books.  I loved his voice and how he would emphasize a certain word, name, or phrase to make his point. His unique way of pronouncing my name, McConnelwicz - lending it a bit of Irish.  I remember  one Saturday traveling the county with him putting up signs for one of his campaigns - what a treat that was.  He always seemed to have time for me when I would just pop in on him in the county treasurer's office.  He'd be there reading with his glasses down his nose when I would interrupt him and I always  felt so privileged to spend some time with this great man.  And what a marvelous laugh he had - that will always stay with me.  My condolences to all the Carriages, no finer family could I imagine and your parents' greatest legacy.

Among my warmest memories of our years together at Franciscan University are the times spent in the company of John and Mary.  John was an inspiring teacher, a great story-teller, a dear friend and colleague. I can still hear that hearty laugh of his that accompanied every conversation we ever had. We are so sorry that the weather prevented us from being there to offer our condolences in person, but our prayers are with John, Mary the family always

He made history come alive when I(Regina) was a student and I was honored to later become his colleague. Both Doc and your mother were welcoming and gracious to both Victor and me. My sympathy to all of you on the passing of your dear father.  We were truly blessed to be next door neighbors to the Carrigg family on Belleview Blvd. and to watch all of you grow up.  Your parents were amazing, always remaining calm and serene among all the challenges of raisng a large family.  We have many happy memories of our neighborhood and the Carrigg family. I am lucky enough to have one of you named for me. Thinking of you all with love.

Although I am a great newphew of John, Margret Mary and Paul by relation, my grandfather is Richard, I have followed Uncle John's life in fascination, and feel a close bond to him and the Carriggs.

I know all the stories, how tough he was as an adolescent on the streets of South Buffalo, what a great big brother and son he was to his family before he started his own family.

I have named my daughters in large part due to the respect I have always had for John and Mary and their family. My oldest daughter is Catherine Renee, middle daughter is Shannon Margaret, and youngest is Mary Patricia. Our Mary was born in November of 2010.

I remember vividly the horse farm when I was about 8 years old and several visits to John and Mary's home in Stuebenville.

I remember vividly at a party at Paul/Colleen/Kelly Carrigg's house when I was 23, and had just finished my first year living in NYC, post college. Uncle John stated "Now Tommy", "I hear you are living in New York, yes, "I replied proudly" John stated " There are many Liberals in New York" Catching me off guard at first, I paused and then replied, "Yes", "but we are trying to level the boat" Uncle John smiled and nodded in agreement.

Later I would learn of John's influence by professors at Georgetown, and wish I would have had the chance to have had a deeper discussion on his views and perspective on all things historic and present.

One could not fully savor the the wine that was an education and delight at the College if they did not take a course from Dr. Carrigg.  He made learning a treat.  To say he will be deeply missed is an understatement.  We all learned more than History from him.  He truly taught life.  My deepest sympathies to the entire family.

I have nothing but fond memories of my days at Steubie U, which include your father, as well as both of you, especially during my freshman year in 1967. We are so sorry for the "physical" loss of your father. Our hearts grieve, pray, and hope with yours. Your father was a wonderful man and stellar professor. I will never forget when he pulled me aside and very gently stated, "They didn't teach you much history in that public school you attended." He was so right and set me on a path to correct it! Dr Carrigg was one of my favorite professors at Franciscan U. I can remember his voice like it was yesterday, telling personal stories about WWII. His humor and kindness, love of his family and love for life always radiated from him. He always had time for a good story! I actually was interested in history when he was talking about it. Eternal Rest to him. Sorry to his wife and family for your loss.

A fine teacher (the finest), a true gentleman and friend. We corresponded until recent years. My mother met him once: at my graduation, and to this day she remembers him. God rest his soul and grant consolation to his family. Dr. Carrigg was a tuly great man!

I grew to have a love of history in Doc's classroom. The seed for that love was planted by my own father, also a WWII Veteran. And Doc brought the seed to life. What a legacy he has left for so many family, friends, colleagues & alumni. Thanks, Doc. Well done, good and faithful servant.

My condolences to the family.  I am blessed to have known Doc.   Theresa, I am reminded of our great memories at Steubie U. with Steve Nagy and the gang.  Seems like only yesterday.

The world has lost a great man and a great history professor.   I graduated from "Steuby U" in 1971 with a history degree.   Dr Carigg was the consummate professor.    His story telling ability could keep you spellbound, but you knew that you needed to keep taking notes!  My sincere sympathy to the family.....your father and loved one touched thousands of lives.    Also, I was a student teacher at St Peter's in the winter of 1971 & had one of the Carrigg daughter's in my class...I felt so inadequate.... realizing what a great historian that she had as her father.

I took a class from Dr. Carrigg on WWII my freshman year. He was such a fantastic teacher who shared his personal experiences with his students. Truly a man from the greatest generation! He will be greatly missed! All of you will be in my prayers.

One of Steubenville's greats has passed on.  I have fond memories of him and attending his classes at the University.  Hardly just another class to attend, his sessions were always interesting and entertaining.

Doc Carrigg was a great teacher but my fondest memories are of working with him on the farm. We dug post holes, planted pumpkins and tomatoes, mowed hay etc. Always with a steady conversation about life. The world was put right many times with these discussions. 

I remember one day he picked me up after class and we headed off to spray the pumpkins. He had this array of old containers into which we were going to mix the chemical.  I picked up one and gave it a sniff and must have reeled back from the stench.  He asked me " does it smell like the devil." for some reason this piqued my sense of humour.  I could not stop laughing all the way to the farm. And of course since he got a reaction he kept repeating it. 

It was an absolute privilege to work with him in the fresh air. I have often thought about him since I left Steubenville and did manage to write him for a few years after I left. I considered him something of a mentor during my time in the USA. A beautiful spirit having a thoroughly human experience.

Thank you to your lovely family for sharing him with me.

We have many fond memories of both John And Mary. When we first came to Steubenville they welcomed us into their family. We shared so many wonderful times together.  We have lost a very special friend.  Our love to all of you.

John, saw your fathers obituary in the Herald Star and wanted to send my condolences.  I remember your family attending mass at St. Peters Church on many Sundays.  Thinking back  I have to marvel at your parents for  getting 10 children up, dressed, and in church on time.  I still can see the Carriggs in procession walking to their seat in the first very long pew, with not much room to spare.  So sorry for your great loss.

Having served on the Franciscan University faculty (Dianne- 35 years and Dan-13years) we had many interactions with Doc over that period of time. His personal interest in both of us and our family members was well appreciated. His

Dr. Carrigg was my advisor as well as my professor in the early 60s.  I transferred after two years, and as an undergraduate and a graduate student, I never had a better professor.  Dr. Carrigg clearly loved teaching and loved  history....he made it come to life.  I have never forgotten one of my most favorite professors.  He was also very kind and helpful outside the classroom.  My brother, Tom, who worked at Franciscan University for 25 years often told me that Dr. Carrigg would ask how I was doing. Our sincere condolences. He was a phenomenal man.  We have many memories....St.Peter's, College, Snug Harbor.  His Storytelling and Maple Tree Tapping are great topics for many of our family conversations...our kids remember him well.  Blessings to your family.

Doc & family,  I have so many great memories of my childhood that are intertwined with the Carrigg family, the farm and the Labelle hilltop. My first experience at horseback riding at age 10 was on Molly, a Percheron.( which has lead to a lifetime of "go big or go home")  Picking corn while hearing tales of the Iliead.  I could go on and on..  Doc, the world, and thousands of lives, are in better shape because God saw it fit to bless us with your guidance & influence

 You are all in my thoughts! I have so many wonderful memories growing up with all of you and so many spending time on the farm! Making maple syrup, which I do my self now and think of him every spring when I tap, watching your dad work those horses, even handing over the reigns to me a few times,  picking field corn by hand, those huge gardens, camping, riding Teddy!
