I worked with John the whole time he was in the Ohio Air National Guard. We went on many deployments in the states and overseas. Germany, England, Panama (fishing the Panama Canal) to name a few. Our families got to know each other and became good friends. We took our daughters and my son on fishing trips and vacations together. John and I went on MANY fishing trips and always had a good time. Sometimes we caught fish and sometimes not, but we always had fun. I don't know how we became such good friends but we always got along so well. It has been a long time since I last saw John with me living in Montana and he in Tennessee. It is a shame I didn't keep in better touch with him. I guess I'll have to live with that. Rest in peace John. I hope to see you again somewhere fishing. Your friend always, Don Sanborn

My fondest memories of 'Uncle John' include family get togethers where Grandpa Philippi, Uncle Danny, Doug, John and Dad would play poker for hours, which made the women so unhappy. But the guys played on, enjoying themselves to the max! We cousins knew that the poker game would go on no matter (I wonder who the winners were?) And I don't ever remember John without a smile on his face - he seemed so happy to be with all the Philippi clan. Now, these many years later, the poker games are long gone but the memories remain. They truly were good times and I remember them fondly. Know that I am thinking of my three Gerhardt cousins and praying that God bless and keep you all.
