

John D. “Johnnie”Griffith, age 93 of Dayton, passed away Sunday, September 7, 2014 at 10 Wilmington Place. He was preceded in death by his wife, Nora Jean Griffith, in 2004 and a son, John B. “Jack” Griffith in 2013. He is survived by a daughter, Joan Johnson and husband Ray of Beavercreek and a daughter-in-law, Linda Sue Griffith of Cincinnati. His grandchildren also survive him: Jon Griffith of FL, Greg and wife Ursula Johnson of Beavercreek, Beth and husband John Wiley of Dayton, Ben Johnson of Beavercreek, and Asher Griffith of Cincinnati, as do two nephews: Morris McDaniel of Dayton, Mark McDaniel of GA and a niece, Phyllis Marciniak of Cleveland and his former daughter-in-law Karen Hirshberg of FL. He is also survived by a cousin, Shirley Gaffney of MO, with whom he was raised as a child. John was a US Army Veteran of World War II, serving in the Pacific Theater. He was a member of the Masonic Lodge and Scottish Rite for seventy years; he retired from the furniture department of Sears and Roebuck with thirty years of service and was also employed at Rike’s for many years; he was the oldest member of St. Paul United Methodist Church. A celebration of Johnnie’s life will be held at St. Paul United Methodist Church on Sunday, September 14, 2014 at 2 PM with Rev. Beth Holten officiating. Friends may call on the family from 1 PM until the time of the memorial service on Sunday.
