

John David Sostrom, age 75, of Beavercreek, OH, passed away on Wednesday, May 27, 2026. He was born in Riverton, Wyoming, to the late John P. and Shirley “Ann” Sostrom. His family later moved to Yellow Springs, OH, where he graduated from Yellow Springs High School.
In 1968, John enlisted in the United States Navy. After completing boot camp in 1969, he attended “B School” where he studied electricity and electronics and “Sea School” where he became qualified as a Fire Control Technician specializing in Missiles. Throughout the rest of his military career, he went on to complete three combat tours and earn multiple commendations, including two Bronze Stars, Senior Master of Arms, Navy Combat Action Ribbon, Vietnam Service Medal, and many more. John was honorably discharged from the United States Navy after being injured in the line of duty.
Following his military service, John worked as an I.T. specialist for 15 years for companies such as Champion International, Dayco, Northrup Grumman, Standard Register, IBM, CSC, and his own I.T. business called Netcentricities. He also remained deeply involved in veteran service organizations by serving as Commander of the American Legion in Beavercreek, Adjutant of the VFW 8312, and as a board member of the Greene County Veterans Services.
John was also deeply connected to his community and volunteer work. He devoted much of his time to coaching sports teams for his kids. He was known for his singing at veteran’s memorials on special commemorative days and in Mt. Zion Church’s men’s choir, while running their sound system. He also participated in the Beaver Program and created the Bibs Beaver for the 25th anniversary of Beavercreek becoming a city, which is now at Valley Elementary School. John also found joy in pursuing his hobbies such as photography, painting, grilling and pie making, cruises, and spending time with his family.
Aside from his parents, John is also preceded in death by his son, Stephen Sostrom; his stepson, Jordan Russell; and his son-in-law, Andrew Lingg.
John is survived by his wife of 38 years, Julie Sostrom; his children, Maria Lingg, Ben Sostrom (Jeff Horst), John Eric Sostrom, and Melissa Choi Sostrom; his grandchildren, Dante and Damien Sostrom and Cohen Davies; and his sisters, Kristen Sostrom and Deena “Dee” Sostrom (Hal Moore). He is also survived by a host of nieces, nephews, and friends.
