Joyce Carole (Stansberry) Fischer, age 93, of Kettering, passed away peacefully on Tuesday, November 3, surrounded by her loving family. Joyce was born on December 15, 1932, in Dayton, Ohio, to Elmer and Edythe Stansberry. Growing up, dance was her passion, including ballet, toe, and tap. In 1950 she graduated from Wilbur Wright High School, where she met the love of her life and future husband, Roy Fischer. Joyce, the dancer, would drag a reluctant Roy, a non-dancer, out onto the dance floor, and over time they became very skilled jitterbuggers. After graduating from Miami-Jacobs Business College, Joyce went to work as a legal secretary for many years.
She was a longtime member of St. Paul Lutheran Church and was very involved in Project Blessing at the church. When St. Paul closed, she became a member at Mighty Fortress Lutheran Church. She was a leader in the Fairmont East Athletic Boosters, where she served as secretary. She was also a dedicated Girl Scout leader for both of her daughters and provided a fun, meaningful experience for many young girls in Kettering.
Joyce and Roy married on June 18, 1955 and were married for over 60 years until Roy’s death in 2015. They became parents with the birth of their son Steve, followed by their two daughters Jane and Carole. Joyce and Roy tried not to miss any of their children’s events as they grew up, and family vacations were always memorable. Joyce especially loved their trips to the beach.
Their children presented them with eight grandchildren and two step-grandchildren. Joyce embraced her role as “Granma” and loved each of her grandchildren unconditionally. She was their biggest fan and always a great listener. She and Roy loved watching them participate in their various activities and babysat them too many times to count. In her final hours, all eight of Joyce’s adoring grandchildren either came to the hospital or called on speakerphone to tell her they loved her, so she left this world secure in the impact she had made on each of them.
Joyce was preceded in death by her parents, her husband Roy, her sister Susan, and her brother-in-law Fred. She is survived by her children Steve (Tina) Fischer, Jane (Roger) Jones, and Carole (Larry) Lamb; grandchildren Matt (Andrea) Fischer, Nicole (Chad) Salle, Ben Fischer, Amanda (Jason) Miller, Emily (Kennon) Coleman, Tony (Amy) Lamb, Andy (Elena) Lamb, and Ali (boyfriend Christian Demko) Lamb; step-grandchildren Jonnna Emanuelson, Shawna (Michael) Gleason; great-grandchildren Emma, Annabelle, Everett, Katie (Bryan), Bergen, Cooper, Lucas, Connor, Drew, Owen, Bobby, and Libby; step-great-grandchildren Dawsen, Maggie, Thomas, and Connor; brother-in-law Dave Buschar; sister-in-law Karen Fischer; niece Amy (Nick) Mann; nephew Tim (Robyn) Buschar; and dear cousin Gretchen Danielewicz.
Joyce’s friendliness and her warm smile made her a favorite of so many. She lived a truly unselfish, beautiful life according to her deep faith in God, loved by her family and her many friends, and she will be missed by all she leaves behind.
The family will receive friends on Monday, November 9, from 10-11 am at Tobias Funeral Home, Far Hills Chapel, followed by a memorial service at 11. Burial will be at David’s Cemetery followed by a luncheon in the community mausoleum at David’s. In lieu of flowers, please consider making a donation in Joyce’s name to American Heart Association.
