

She was born on August 13, 1930, the only child of Claude F. and Mildred Crider. Joyce was preceded in death by her loving husband John Richard Miles and her son Robert Miles. Joyce is survived by her four children and their families: Stephen D. Miles and Valerie Miles, Lauren (Viengsamai), Melinde; David R. and Mary Miles, Julie and Katie (Kyle McCartney); Elizabeth and Donald Specht, Jennifer (Doug Zinn), Laura and Rachel (Austin Schreier); James C. Miles (Tina Thomas), Daniel (Jordan) and Justin (Christina); and Robert's children, Amy (Tim) and Betsy (Joe). Joyce was also the proud great-grandmother of Ellie Brandon, Henry and Christian Helsby, Kinsley McCartney, Judd and Drew Miles, and Liam Miles.
Joyce attended Butler University where she was a member of the marching band and a member of Alpha Chi Omega social sorority. Her first professional position was in administration at Indiana University where her husband was attending. Joyce and Dick were married February 4,1951 and the family lived in Centerville, Indiana for 13 years. Joyce assisted her husband in publishing and printing newspapers in Centerville and New Castle Indiana. The family moved to Kettering in 1966. Joyce was hired as a reference librarian and worked at the Far Hills and Wilmington-Stroop branches. She retired after 20 years of service. Joyce was a loving and warm-hearted person. She was a model mother and grandmother and was heavily involved with her family’s activities. Joyce enjoyed her garden flowers and was an avid reader. She was a terrific cook and enjoyed entertaining relatives and friends in her home. She was a gracious and kind person. Joyce was a life-long Christian and an active member of Central Christian Church and the Lydia women’s group. After retirement, Joyce became a volunteer in the city’s Volunteer Activities office and served as an usher at the Fraze. She enjoyed helping second grade students at John F. Kennedy Elementary School improve their reading skills. Joyce also volunteered with the Dayton Salvation Army at Christmas distributing food.
The family will receive friends at David’s Cemetery Mausoleum on Monday July 21, 2025 at Noon – 1:30. The funeral service will follow immediately.
In lieu of flowers, the family would like donations to be made to the Richard and Joyce Miles Legacy Fund at the Dayton Salvation Army, 1000 N. Keowee Street, Dayton, Ohio 45404.
