ULLMER, Lavern Charles, Pfc; United States ARMY, age 23, was a P.O.W. and listed M.I.A. during a battle in the Kunu-ri to Sunch which was later called “the Gauntlet” which lasted from November 25 thru December 1, 1950 in North Korea. The North Korean People’s Army intermittently provided lists of POW’s but Private Ullmer’s name never appeared on these lists of prisoners. It was not until 2005 that a Joint POW/MIA Accounting Command and North Korean People’s Army Recovery Team recovered surface remains and material from a site 12.5 miles from the Pukchin-Tarigol POW Camp Cluster where two returning POW’s reported Pfc Ullmer died at the Hofong Camp. Through the use of present day DNA technology, it was only recently that it was possible to make a positive identification of Pfc Ullmer’s remains and return them to American soil where they are to be interred in a final resting place, with full Military Honors, between his parents John and Helen Ullmer.
