Lawrence Joseph Carter

Larry was a proud 1971 graduate of Wapakoneta High School. He later went on to earn a bachelor’s degree in Math Education from Wright State University in 1976 and a master’s degree in Computer Science from the University of Dayton in 1987. His brilliant mind, natural curiosity, and love for problem-solving were evident throughout both his career and his everyday life.

Larry began his career as a math teacher at Carroll High School, where he taught from 1977 to 1981. He then spent nine years as a computer consultant at NCR before joining Teradata in 1990, where he continued his career as a computer consultant and instructor until his retirement in 2020. Throughout Larry’s career, he traveled to over 33 countries and developed a love for travel. He had a special ability to understand complex problems and a genuine gift for sharing his knowledge with others around the world.

One of Larry’s greatest passions throughout his life was tennis. He played varsity tennis at Wright State University from 1974 to 1976. He continued this passion by becoming a longtime member of the Beavercreek Clay Tennis Courts and Quail Run/Kettering Tennis Club. He won multiple local tennis tournaments and shared his love of sports by coaching tennis and basketball at Carroll High School. He spent several years coaching his grandson, Carter, in his elementary soccer league.

Larry had a lifelong love of sports cars, especially Corvettes. He also enjoyed playing cards with friends, board games with his family, and challenging himself with Sudoku. He was incredibly handy and was always willing to lend a helping hand, whether that meant fixing something around the home or being there when someone needed him. Larry was a man of strong faith and was a longtime member of St. Luke’s Catholic Church.

More than anything, Larry will be remembered for the way he made people feel. He never knew a stranger. He was outgoing, positive, funny, and a wonderful storyteller. He loved sharing about his worldly adventures. He lived life fully and loved his friends and family deeply. Larry’s stories, lessons, and legacy will be carried forward.

Larry was a devoted husband, father, grandfather, son, brother, and friend. He was preceded in death by his mother, Ruth Carter of Wapakoneta, Ohio. Larry is survived by his father, Joseph Carter, age 98, of Wapakoneta, Ohio; his wife, Cynthia Carter of Beavercreek, Ohio; his brother, Terence Carter and wife Rhonda of Cincinnati, Ohio; his brother, Gary Carter and wife Pam of Fort Loramie, Ohio; his daughter, Kelly Carter and husband Nicholas Dalton of Bellbrook, Ohio; and his beloved grandchildren, Carter, Kyrie, and Trae Lawrence, who brought immense joy and pride to his life.

Visitation for Larry will be held on Tuesday, August 25, 2026, from 5:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m at Tobias Funeral Home in Beavercreek. A Mass will take place the following morning at 10:30am at St. Luke Catholic Church, followed by interment at Calvary Cemetery. Memorial contributions can be made to the American Cancer Society.
