Lura Bowers Gabriele

September 23, 1920June 11, 2021

Gabriele Lura (Bowers), age 100, of Kettering Ohio, passed away peacefully Friday, June 11, 2021. Lura was born September 23, 1920 to Willie Cate and Benjamin H. Bowers in Greene County, TN. She was raised there, an only child, and later attended Milligan College where she met and married the love of her life. Preceded in death by her husband, Dr. A.J. Gabriele in 1995, and their only child, William J. Gabriele in 2014. She is survived by her two granddaughters, Elizabeth (Doug) Herriman of Northville, MI and Catherine (Colt) Shannon of Powell, OH, daughter-in-law Gayle Gabriele of Kettering and great grandchildren Wynn and Cal Herriman and Savannah Shannon. She is also survived by several nieces and a nephew in TN and VA as well as dear friends in NC, FL, Miamisburg, and a very special one right next door. Lura was an avid reader, a wonderful cook, and loved nothing more than feeding family and friends around her grandmother’s big oak table on Sunday nights. Italian of course and her famous cheese cake. Her flower and vegetable gardens were her passion, planting one herself as recently as 2018. She was a lover of nature and fed her birds and squirrels and raccoons year round. The Gabriele family have been loyal Flyer faithful of the Dayton Flyers for many years—always with season passes. March Madness was her favorite time of year. She will be greatly missed but her spirit and zest for life will live on in each of our hearts. Funeral arrangements by Tobias Funeral Home, Far Hills Avenue. Private services will be held at the convenience of the family. Memorial contributions in her name may be made to Hospice of Dayton or SISCA. The family wishes to thank the wonderful staff at Lincoln Park Manor and Hospice of Dayton for their superior care. Condolences may be made to www.tobiasfuneralhome.com.

Anne and I had 23 wonderful years as next door neighbors to Gabe and Lura. They were absolutely the best neighbors and friends ever. We enjoyed our interactions with them both. We have fond memories of Lura's first BLT of the season when her first tomato ripened. We recall being at a restaurant with them and seeing Gabe pull a pepper grown in their garden to enjoy with his salad. We recall hearing cheers from across the driveway, especially during March Madness week, as Lura watched her Dayton Flyers and other teams play. One of my fondness memories was being invited to participate in Sunday dinner next door, an evening that was reserved for family only.

Gayle, Elizabeth and Catherine,
So sorry for your loss. I think we all thought she would live forever! My fondest memories of Lura are seeing her walk up and down the isles of UD arena during the basketball games. She always waved and had a big smile. That was her happy place. She was such a great lady and she will be missed.
