Marcella Louise (Hornick) Crews passed away peacefully in the early hours of Sunday, September 11, 2022 after a bravely fought battle with dementia. She was a beloved wife, mother, grandmother, and aunt during her 95 years of life.
Marcella was born on May 5, 1927 in Dayton, Ohio the daughter of Charles and Estella Hornick, sister to Dorothy (Hornick) Foster and two brothers who died of tuberculosis at an early age. She graduated from Roosevelt High School in 1943 and took her first job as a telephone operator for Ohio Bell. About the same time, Marcy met the love of her life, Paul Crews from Beach Creek, Ky. They dated until Paul was drafted into the army where he served in the European campaign between 1943 and 1945. They were later married in 1948.
Paul and Marcy were blessed with three boys Michael, Stephen, and Mark Crews. While raising the children, Marcy began work with the Rike Kumler Company and remained a 45-year dedicated employee through the company’s transition to Rike’s and finally to Macy’s. This job was part of Paul and Marcy’s plan to ensure all three children would have the best educational opportunities.
If there was anything more exciting to Marcy beyond golf and travelling with Paul, it was celebrating the holidays with family. She was the anchor, head chef, and hostess for so many over-crowded Thanksgiving meals and kept the spirit of family Christmas alive by showcasing her own brand of hospitality throughout the holidays. During the rest of the year, she loved working with the Immaculate Conception Parish cooking meals for the homeless in the Dayton area.
In 2008, Paul died after a lengthy battle with cardio-vascular disease. Marcy recalibrated her life’s focus on her Christian faith, sharing good times with her best friend, Lynda Profitt of Kettering, and her loving companion-dog, Heidi. The two of them were inseparable with Marcy and Heidi often seen walking each other around the block or in various places throughout the Kettering area. Another “serious” past-time was her fastidious attention to her home garden where she was awarded the Kettering Beautification Award. Dayton Dragon fans may also remember her as the ticket lady who welcomed everyone to the home games with a smile.
Marcy believed in a simple recipe for a happy life, cherishing family, faith in God, and a good glass of wine. In her later years, she would often exclaim “I’ve lived well into my nineties, and I’ve been very blessed.”
So have we, Mom. Rest in peace.
