Mary Charters, age 82, of Washington Township, passed away Tuesday, September 15th, 2026, leaving behind a legacy of devotion to her family, a vibrant professional life, and an exceptional creative spirit.
A proud 1962 graduate of St. Joseph Commercial High School in Dayton, Ohio, Mary built a versatile and accomplished career powered by her sharp intellect, strong work ethic, and dedication. She contributed her talents to a wide variety of organizations over the years, including a local law practice as a legal secretary, Wright-Patterson Air Force Base, the Social Security Administration, Rec Tec Center, DESI, and the University of Dayton. Following a move to Libertyville, Illinois with her family in 1984, she showcased her gift for language as the editor of a national trade journal.
Beyond her professional pursuits, Mary was a woman of vast creativity. An extraordinarily talented crafter, she was especially renowned for her handmade greeting cards. Each card was a true work of art—a tangible reflection of the love, care, and intricate detail she poured into everything she touched.
Mary was preceded in death by her father, James Albert Finnegan; her mother, Claire Theresa Tippmann Finnegan; and her sister, Kathleen. She is survived and deeply missed by her beloved husband of 62 years, Jim; her children, John (Brandee), Theresa Gavarone (Jim), and Tom; and her cherished grandchildren, Chris, Cara (Josh), and Jimmy. Mary’s warmth, artistic soul, and steadfast heart leave an indelible mark on all who knew her.
Visitation Monday, September 28th, 2026 4:00 to 7:00 PM at Tobias Funeral Home - Far Hills Chapel, 5471 Far Hills Ave., Dayton, Ohio 45429. Mass of Christian Burial Tuesday, September 29th, 2026 10:30 AM at the Church of the Incarnation, 7415 Far Hills Ave., Centerville, Ohio 45459. Burial will follow directly at Calvary Cemetery, 1625 Calvary Drive, Dayton, Ohio 45409.
