He is preceded in death by his wife, Patricia Isham, whom he lovingly knew as “His Patsy”; parents Ray Isham and Carrie Vann-Isham; and his siblings: Marvin and Otis Isham; son-in-law: Blaine Fryman; and special cousins: Allen Vann, Patricia Vann-Harris, and Jerry Vann-Orndorf.
Melvin is survived by his daughters: Scherry A. (Alan) Staley, Angela D. Fryman; stepson: Gary L. (Lori) Smith; grandchildren: CDR Eric (LCDR. Allison) Porter, Lt. Matthew (Abbi) Staley, and Holly (Steven) Bass; great-grandchildren: Aiden, Carter, and Paisley Porter and Averie and Hallie Staley. Many cousins, nieces, and nephews also survive him.
Melvin retired from General Motors, where he worked 32 years at the Delco Moraine Brake Division. He was involved as an active member of the United Auto Workers Union. He was an avid hunter, gardener, and enjoyed “tinkering” in his garage and shed. He and “Patsy” shared 68 years of devoted marriage in the Dayton area, watching their family grow.
Melvin found pride watching his daughters and grandsons reach milestones in their lives. He loved sharing his passion for classic country music, bird watching, and gardening when visiting with his great-grandchildren. Melvin loved his country and took a vested interest in politics following retirement. Melvin always had a harmless joke, magic trick, or riddle on hand, never leaving you without a smile.
In keeping with Melvin’s wishes, funeral services will be private, and his final resting place will be at Evergreen Cemetery in West Carrollton. In place of
flowers, the family asks for memorial contributions to Dayton Children's Hospital Oncology services, where his great-granddaughter, Hallie Staley, received treatment.
