Patricia Kelleher

Patricia Kelleher, beloved mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, educator, and devoted Catholic, passed away peacefully on August 2, 2026, at Paramount Senior Living in Fredericksburg, Virginia. She was 95 years old.

Born on October 16, 1930, in South Deerfield, Massachusetts, Patricia lived a life rooted in faith, family, and a profound commitment to education. Her Catholic faith, instilled during her upbringing, remained the cornerstone of her life, guiding her values, her service to others, and her unwavering belief in the dignity and potential of every person she encountered.

Patricia shared a loving and steadfast marriage of 62 years with her husband, James C. Kelleher. Together, they raised five children and built a rich family life while living in Massachusetts, Vermont, Oregon, California, Ohio, and Virginia. Wherever they called home, Patricia created a warm and welcoming environment filled with love, laughter, and hospitality.

A lifelong educator, Patricia dedicated her professional career to both public and Catholic education. She spent 20 years teaching in public schools and another 20 years serving in Catholic schools. Her career spanned roles as a high school teacher, elementary school teacher, guidance counselor, principal, and dean of academics. Her work in Catholic education reflected not only her professional calling but also her deep faith and commitment to nurturing compassion, integrity, and intellectual curiosity in her students.

Her passion for learning extended to her own academic pursuits. Patricia earned a Bachelor of Arts from Regis College, a Master of Arts from Framingham State University, and a Ph.D. in Educational Leadership from the University of Dayton. She continued teaching as an adjunct professor for the University of Dayton, leading online graduate courses until the age of 90. Throughout her life, she inspired countless students with her wisdom, encouragement, and steadfast belief in their abilities.

Patricia was preceded in death by her beloved husband, James, in 2016; her daughter, Grace Kelleher Heigel (Ken), in 2001; and her grandson, John “Jake” Kelleher, in 2004.

She is survived by her children: James J. Kelleher (Ethel) of North Carolina, John Kelleher (Susan) of South Dakota, Mary Kelleher Smith (George) of Virginia, and Sarah Kelleher Belden (Michael) of Massachusetts. She also leaves behind 15 grandchildren and 25 great-grandchildren, all of whom were blessed by her love, guidance, and unwavering support.

Patricia will be remembered for her intellect, kindness, strength of character, and deep devotion to her faith and family. Her legacy lives on in the generations she nurtured, the students she inspired, and the communities she served with grace, humility, and compassion. She will be deeply missed and lovingly remembered by all who had the privilege of knowing her.

In lieu of flowers, Patricia requested that memorial donations be made to the Grace Kelleher Heigel Memorial Scholarship at the University of Dayton. Contributions may be made through the scholarship fund at Grace Kelleher Heigel Memorial Scholarship.

Services will be held, Saturday, August 22, 2026, at St Henry Chapel at Calvary Cemetery, 1625 Calvary Avenue, Dayton, Ohio 45409. Visitation will begin at 9:00 a.m., followed by a Funeral Mass at 10:00 a.m., with interment immediately following. Condolences may be sent to www.tobiasfuneralhome.com
