He is survived by his loving wife of 68 years, Dorothy (Gudorf) Stein; children, Debra (Andy) Jacobson, Doug (Becky) Stein, Paula (Greg) Sabo, and Tony (Margo) Stein; grandchildren, Julian Jacobson (Nicole), Stephen Jacobson, Nicole (Aaron) Cook, Lindsay (Adam) Blakely, Brooke (Paul) Shoemaker, Brandon Stein (Emma), Alyssa (Tim) Shovlin, Abby (Zach) Zwiesler, Haley Sabo (Jamie), Alec Stein, Bailey Stein (Audrey), Madison Stein, and Macy Stein; great-grandchildren, Landon, Annabelle, Logan, and Adelyn Cook, AJ and Kenzee Blakely, Piper Shoemaker, and Daniel and Benjamin Shovlin.
Born on November 30, 1935 in Cincinnati, Ohio, to immigrant parents from Erdevick and Futak in the Austria-Hungary region, he grew up embodying the values of hard work, perseverance, and devotion to family.
A dedicated and loving son, brother, husband, father, grandfather, and friend, he carried these roles with quiet strength and unwavering loyalty.
He graduated from Chaminade High School in 1953 and soon after answered the call to serve his country. From 1953 to 1956, he served in the U.S. Navy serving in Cuba and on the commissioning crew aboard the USS Forrestal aircraft carrier.
In 1958, he earned his degree in Engineering Technology from the University of Dayton. His professional life was marked by three decades of service to the Federal Government at the Defense Electronics Supply Center (DESC), where he worked diligently as an Electronic Technician in Parts Control. His commitment ensured efficiency and precision in operations and technical specifications, reflecting his analytical mind and perfectionist nature.
Beyond his government career, he honored his family legacy by supporting and later managing Stein’s Market, the family grocery and meat business. A skilled butcher, he stepped in after his father’s accident in the 1970s, sustaining the store with resilience and craftsmanship before returning to DESC. His ability to balance both worlds — civil service and family enterprise — spoke to his tenacity and devotion.
After retiring in 1990, he continued to express his creativity and industrious spirit as an artistic carpenter, craftsman, and handyman extraordinaire “Mr. Fixit”.
As a grandfather, he offered encouragement, wisdom, and unconditional love as he tenderly welcomed each grandchild and great grandchild into the family. Each were always heard and seen. His generosity extended beyond family, as he was always a good neighbor — shoveling snow, lending a hand, and living with conscientious kindness.
His qualities were many: perfectionist, analyst, dependable, gracious, cautious, tenacious, trustworthy, caring, thoughtful, kind, considerate, respectful, and occasionally stubborn. He was a problem solver, a teacher, and old-fashioned values who lived with dignity and purpose. He was a cheerful Santa who delighted family and friends for years during the holiday season.
Above all, his life reflects fortitude and resilience — a journey of service, family devotion, and steadfast integrity. His legacy is one of gratitude: gratitude for the sacrifices he made, the lessons he taught, and the love he gave so freely.
The family would like to extend their gratitude for the support from Dynamic Senior Solutions provided over the past year, especially Kevin McClure who Paul considered a special friend.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 11am on Monday, December 22, 2025, at St. Helen Catholic Church. Fr. Del Staigers celebrant. Interment will follow at Calvary Cemetery. The family will receive friends at the Tobias Funeral Home – Beavercreek Chapel from 1pm – 4pm on Sunday, December 21.
In lieu of flowers donations may be made in memory of Paul to Hospice of Dayton, OH and St. Vincent DePaul Society (St. Helen’s Church).
