Peter A. Whitby, age 61 of Dayton passed away on June 23, 2025. He was preceded in death by his parents, Harvie and Esther Whitby. Pete is survived by his loving wife Cara, children Peter M. Whitby and Emily L. (David) Craddock, siblings Lora H. (Jeffrey) Snow, Michael (Kimberly) Whitby, Harvie “Tim” W. (Amy) Whitby III, and Elizabeth “Betsy” (Ralph) Kondall, numerous nieces and nephews.
Pete retired from the Dayton Fire Department in 2021, after several promotions, including his last 10 years as District Chief. After retirement he worked part-time for UC Health Mobile Care until January 2024. He was an active member of St. Paul’s Episcopal Church, where he met the love of his life, Cara, with whom he loved spending all of his free time. Pete had several hobbies and interests. He enjoyed bicycling, photography, aviation, cooking, wildlife, history, music, movies, trivia, current events, and restoring old wooden furniture. He was a world traveler, having been to many countries, including Israel, France, Amsterdam, Ireland, Germany, and England. He was an athlete beyond compare, an avid runner who completed 17 half-marathons and 9 full marathons, though he was humble about these achievements.
Pete was a strong-minded, genuine, inquisitive person who possessed a strong love of learning and a fierce loyalty to his family, especially his children, wife, and best friends Bruce and Bill. He had a contagious smile, a wickedly funny sense of humor, and a kind and giving heart. He will be dearly missed by all who loved him.
A Memorial Service will be held for Pete at 11:00 AM, Saturday, June 28, 2025, at St. Paul’s Episcopal Church, 33 W. Dixon Ave. in Oakwood. A visitation/reception will immediately follow the service at the church parish hall. Online condolences may be left at www.tobiasfuneralhome.com
