Richard A. Sassaman

Born on August 6, 1941, in Dayton, Ohio, Richard’s life spanned nearly 85 years and was marked by unwavering devotion, resilience, and a deep love for those around him.

Richard faced Alzheimer’s disease with remarkable strength and dignity. Heaven gained a beautiful soul who loved Jesus and loved people—especially his family—with his whole heart. Richard was a devoted father who opened his heart and home to five children, none of whom were biologically his, yet each of whom he loved as his own. His kindness, gentle spirit, and genuine love for others touched the lives of everyone who had the privilege of knowing him.

Richard was preceded in death by his beloved wife, Helen Deloris Sassaman; daughter, Brenda DeWinter; son, Fred DeWinter; parents, Wilbur and Velma Sassaman; siblings, Glenn Sassaman, Janet Sassaman, and Jane Wertz; and granddaughter, Melanie DeWinter; grandson Joshua Few; and son in law, Gordon Hartley.

Richard’s proudest accomplishments were found in his family. He is survived by his loving daughter, Barbara Hartley of Dayton, Ohio; loving son, Joe (Sherry) DeWinter of Lubbock, Texas; daughters-in-law, Lori Spencer of Vandalia, Ohio, and Rhonda DeWinter of Dayton, Ohio; loving son and caregiver, David L. Few Jr. of Springboro, Ohio; and loving daughter, Penny Few of Miamisburg, Ohio, who lovingly cared for him.

He was also a proud and beaming grandfather to Kate (Errol Greer), Tim, Philip, Michael, Heather, Jason, Jeremy, Kellie (Shawn Pean), Desja (Mike Wittmer), and Lauren; as well as 16 great-grandchildren. He leaves behind many loving nieces, nephews, extended family members, and dear friends who will carry his memory in their hearts.

Richard dedicated the majority of his working life to Dayton Metropolitan Housing, where he was known for his strong work ethic, dependability, and commitment before retiring. Outside of work, Richard enjoyed fishing, hunting, and bowling. He also found joy in volunteering at his favorite donut shop, Hole in One in Moraine, Ohio, where he became much more than a familiar face—he was adopted as a beloved member of their family.

The family would like to extend their heartfelt gratitude to Hospice 360 for the compassionate and loving care they provided to Richard, as well as the comfort, guidance, and support they gave to his family during this difficult journey.

Family and friends are invited to honor and celebrate Richard’s life during visitation on Wednesday, August 19, 2026, from 3:00 to 5:00 p.m. at Tobias Funeral Home-Far Hills Chapel, 5471 Far Hills Ave., Dayton, Ohio 45429. A funeral service will follow at 5:00 p.m. His final resting place will be at Woodland Mausoleum.

Richard’s life was one of quiet dignity, unwavering dedication, and gentle strength. He gave his love freely, cared deeply for others, and found his greatest joy in his family. Though he will be deeply missed, the love he gave and the memories he created will live on in the hearts of all who were blessed to know him. His memory will remain a lasting reminder of a life devoted to faith, family, and love.
