Rosco S. Benson, Jr., 68, of Kettering, passed away Saturday, May 20, 2023, at Ohio’s Hospice of Dayton. He was born on April 27, 1955 to parents Rosco and Sara (Ward) Benson, Ros grew up in Kettering and graduated from Fairmont East High School, class of 1973.
Ros worked as a bagger at Dot’s Market through high school. Post-graduation, after a short stint in Houston TX, he moved back to Kettering and made his career in IT at NCR. Ros changed fields after NCR sold the Data Services division, joining the government sector as a Corrections Officer for the Montgomery County Jail. He retired from the Sheriff's Office as Jail Bookkeeper in 2017.
Ros’s lifelong passion was practical shooting, and he was an avid recreational and competitive shooter. In later years, he enjoyed varmint hunting for the camaraderie and wide-open western vistas. Ros was a movie buff, a classic rock and traditional bluegrass fan, and enjoyed reading satire and humor.
He will be remembered by friends and colleagues for his off-the-cuff deadpan humor, by his family for random goofiness and grabbing fatback, and by all for his resonant voice and resolute professionalism.
Ros was preceded in death by his parents and by his daughter, Emily.
Left to cherish his memory are his wife Carole (Hepp), daughter Haley and her husband Jake Reed of New Madison, daughter Chelsey Benson and her fiancé Christopher Lairmore, son Bradley Benson, daughter Courtney Benson, granddaughter Shiloh Peterson all of Kettering, and many dear friends.
The Benson family would like to thank the nurses and aides at Kettering Main Campus 5 East and 3 South, and especially Ohio’s Hospice of Dayton for their tender care and deep compassion. We are forever grateful for their kindness.
A memorial visitation for Rosco will be held Friday, June 2, 2023 from 3:00 PM to 5:00 PM at Tobias Funeral Home - Beavercreek Chapel, 3970 Dayton-Xenia Rd, Dayton, Ohio 45432.
