Longtime resident of Centerville and Washington Township Shirley Ann (Kaericher) Wightman passed away on August 11, 2018 at the Wellington of Dayton at age 86. She was preceded in death by her husband, Edgar R. Wightman, in 2012. Shirley was born and raised in Dayton, the daughter of Harry and Blanche (Naragon) Kaericher. She was a 1950 graduate of Fairview High School, a 1954 graduate of Ball State University, and taught 3rd grade at Van Cleve Elementary School in Dayton for many years. She recently earned her 50 Year pin in the Delta Kappa Gamma International Society for Women Educators, and served as president of the Dayton chapter. She and Edgar were married in 1959 and were together for over 53 years. She was very proud of Ed’s membership in the Dayton Antioch Shrine Temple, and they enjoyed travelling in support of that organization. Shirley became a full-time mother when she and Ed adopted their two children. Her duties as Cub Scout Den Mother, soccer mom and band mom kept her quite busy, yet she still found time to enjoy her gardening and her crossword puzzles. She loved music and musicals, classic movies, and travelling with her family. She was devoted to her extended family as well, and enjoyed hosting them in large numbers for the holidays. Shirley was active with the TWIGs Auxiliary of Dayton Children’s Hospital. She served several terms as president of the Republican Women’s Club, was a precinct captain in Washington Township, and worked as a poll volunteer for many years. She was an active member of Southminster Presbyterian Church in Centerville, serving on many committees and teaching Sunday School. Survivors include her daughter and daughter-in-law Diana Wightman and Linda Roll of Newark, OH; a son, Bruce Wightman of Kettering; grandchildren, Stephanie (Brent) Hurst, J.D. (Samantha Swaim) Roll; great-grandchildren, Charlotte, Connor, and Amelia Hurst, and numerous cousins, nieces and nephews. Funeral Services will be held at 1 pm on Friday August 17, 2018 at the Tobias Funeral Home, Far Hills Chapel, Pastor Gordon Furbay officiating. Burial will be in David’s Cemetery. Friends may call from 11 am – 1 pm Friday at the funeral home. In lieu of flowers memorial contributions may be made to the Hospice of Miami Valley or The Shriners Childrens Hospitals.
