Shui-Nan “Fred” Chuang was born in Taiwan. He excelled in school and matriculated at National Taiwan University, earning a Bachelor’s degree in Civil Engineering in 1966. In 1967, he moved to the United States to study Engineering Science at the State University of New York at Buffalo where he earned a Master’s degree in 1969 and a Doctorate of Philosophy in 1972. During graduate school, he served as president of the Taiwanese Students’ Association and was a member of Tau Beta Pi, the engineering honor society.
On 1969, Shui-Nan married Chiou-Jeu “Chris” in Buffalo, New York. Together they moved to Alabama to start his new job at Southern Research Institute in 1972 in Birmingham where they welcomed their daughters into the family – Caroline, and Eleanore. In 1977, Shui-Nan began working for United Space Boosters Inc. in Huntsville, Alabama as a contractor for the National Aeronautical and Space Administration’s burgeoning space shuttle program. In 1979, the Chuang family moved to Beavercreek, Ohio. Shui-Nan worked at Wright-Patterson Air Force Base for nearly 30 years. He was promoted to Program Manager of Advanced Composites Technology for the United States Air Force Non-destructive Inspection Program and Corrosion Prevention & Control Program and subsequently to Director of the Advanced Technology Program for the National Aerospace Plane. After he retired in 2007, Shui-Nan and Chiou-Jeu traveled extensively and welcomed three grandsons into the world – Gabriel, Morgan, and Adam – sons of daughter Caroline and son-in-law Scott.
Shui-Nan “Fred” Chuang passed away on December 02, 2019, eight years after being diagnosed with Parkinson’s disease. He is survived by Chiou-Jeu (his wife of 50 years), daughters Caroline and Eleanore, and grandsons Gabriel, Morgan, and Adam. He is also survived by his brother Shui-Min and sisters Sue-Mei, Sue-Hui, and Sue-Chin. May he rest in peace.
