She was born on September 21,1921 in Leon, New York to James and Pearl Matteson. In 6th grade she moved to Delevan, New York, met the friend of a lifetime in Kay Pixley, and graduated high school as the valedictorian. After high school both Viola and Kay attended business school in Buffalo, New York. It was then that Viola was introduced to Bob Craig, who happened to be the roommate of Kay’s boyfriend, Jack Baker, at the University of Alabama and the two of them married in 1941.
Bob and Viola moved to Beavercreek, Ohio in 1958 as Bob (deceased 1976) was stationed at Wright-Patterson Air Force Base. Viola was in the same house there for over 63 years and was living on her own at the age of 100!
She thoroughly enjoyed the many summer trips to York, Maine and Western, New York, and years of boating with her family on the Ohio River always working on getting the best tan possible. Viola also treasured the relationship she shared with many of the neighbor ladies as they frequently lunched together and celebrated birthdays over the years.
In 1982, Viola married Clif Robertson, exponentially expanding her family size with a beautiful group of individuals. Clif and Viola shared many wonderful years traveling together and enjoying one another’s company.
Viola always had a green thumb and was active in the Valley View Garden Club for over 50 years serving as President for part of that time. One look inside her house and it was obvious of her love of plants and how they seemed to love her back. She also belonged to the Beaver United Church of Christ and VFW Auxiliary.
Viola loved to read the Dayton Daily News (front to back) each and every day along with many, many books provided to her from the Greene County Library especially enjoying the Daniel Steele stories.
She was so fortunate to have such amazing support at Shawnee Estates for Senior Living and Ohio’s Hospice of Dayton and loved being surrounded by family and friends.
She is preceded in death by her siblings; Lloyd Matteson, Deloris Herrington and Bonnie Matteson, son Jon Craig, and daughter-in-law Peggy Craig: sons; Kenny and Mark Robertson, daughters-in-law; Linda and Suzie Robertson, and granddaughter Laura Robertson.
Viola is survived by her children: Robert B.
