Virgil Nelson Shanks, son of Milton L. and Rebecca (Hilterbran) Shanks was born on October 15, 1919 near Poplar Grove, Ohio and departed this life at Hospice of Dayton in Dayton, Ohio on Monday, September 15, 2014. On October 3, 1942 he was united in marriage to Icie Mae Hilterbran. They had 58 wonderful years together. To this union were born two children, a son James Shanks and a daughter Sandra Henry. Besides his wife Icie, daughter Sandra, and daughter-in-law, Barbara, he was preceded in death by his mother, Rebecca, and father, Milt, three brothers, Clyde, Walter and Robert, four sisters, Lola, Flossie, Dorothy and Pauline. To mourn his loss are his son James (Diana) Shanks of Beavercreek, one grandson Tony (Missy) Shanks of Beavercreek, three granddaughters, Melissa (Doug) Gross of Springboro, Tracy Henry of Beavercreek, Jennifer Shanks, Mike Radi of Chula Vista, California, five great grandchildren, Alec and Jared Shanks Brandon and Alena Gross and Aiden Radi, one sister Mildred Lane of TN, a beloved nephew, Terry Shanks of Dayton and a very dear friend, Bill Reck of Piqua. Virgil spent his early life in the Poplar Grove Community. He moved to Dayton, Ohio and worked at the Sheet Metal Trade until he retired from Hughes - Bechtol on November 1, 1981. He attended Western School in Latham, Ohio. He was a devoted husband, father, grandfather and great-grandfather. Many years ago he accepted Christ as his personal savior and became a member of Mt. Zion Christian Union Church, Poplar Grove, Ohio where he served as Second Elder and Trustee from 1972-1987 and then became honorary trustee. He was a true Christian, not only in word but in deed and his life was his greatest testimony. May it console our hearts to know there are no broken ties but just a veil between our earthly vision and that world unseen. Loved ones here keep tender watch until we too may share the perfect peace of God and the perfect love that's known to those who dwell with him above. Fond memories will linger in the hearts of his family and friends who knew him but we must submit to our Heavenly Father and say "Thy Will be Done". Friends may call on the family on Thursday evening, September 18 from 4-8PM at the TOBIAS FUNERAL HOME - Beavercreek Chapel, 3970 Dayton-Xenia Rd. Funeral services will be held at Mt. Zion Christian Union Church, Poplar Grove, OH on Friday, September 19 at 11 AM. Interment will be in Mt. Zion Cemetery in Poplar Grove.
