Bill was born to Mary and Willis Wharton in Barnesville, Ohio, on September 23, 1937. He grew up in Hillsboro, Ohio, and graduated from Hillsboro High School in 1955 where his years were filled with his love of softball.
He worked in marketing at NCR for most of his life, retiring from his position in 1993. He then proceeded to operate an antique business for the next 10 years, which meant he got to spend more time outside discovering pieces of history.
Bill was an avid sports fan and enjoyed playing golf whenever he could. When he wasn’t golfing, he could often be found visiting with family and walking with his favorite companion, Baylee the dog. He was a member of the Bellbrook Lions Club where he held many offices and was always willing to lend a helping hand to their many projects.
He is much beloved by his wife, Ann, of 64 years and daughters Susan Staley, Rebecca Jay, and Ellen Chicoine (Greg). He is loved and missed by his six grandchildren: Sara Hunt (Jason), Carly Weng (Jay), Benjamin Holahan, Oliver Jay (Megan), Evan Staley, and Claire Staley. His great grandchildren (Lucas and Will Weng, Cora and David Hunt, and Wren, Jay due in July) will grow up hearing about his life and legacy. He will be remembered and treasured by his sisters Jeanne McKenzie and Nancy Skidmore and his brother Mike Wharton (Carol).
Bill and Ann enjoyed their life together. They raised a fine family, traveled wherever they wished, and spent the last 20 winters in Arizona.
In lieu of flowers please honor Bill with donations to Hospice of Dayton.
A celebration of life will be held at Bellbrook Lions Center, 2757 Wilmington Dayton Rd, Sugarcreek Twp. Thursday, May 5 from 4PM to 7PM. Online condolences may be sent to www.tobiasfuneralhome.com
