
Arlene Downs, a cherished beacon of love and family values, passed away peacefully on September 27, 2025, in Coalgate, Oklahoma. Born on October 25, 1944, in Blount County, Alabama, Arlene's journey began as the daughter of Arnest Oliver Gibbs and Iva Teele Gibbs and the granddaughter of Robert Lee and Alice Gibbs, as well as Sidney and Savannah Lillie Teele. Her roots were deeply planted in the values of family and Christian faith that defined her as the matriarch she became.
A 1962 graduate of Berkley High School in Berkley, Michigan, her life took a romantic turn when she married Donald Wayne Downs on November 15, 1969, in Berkley, a union blessed with devotion and mutual respect that lasted until Donald's passing.
Arlene was a woman of myriad interests, from the meticulous craft of cross-stitching to singing melodies that touched the hearts of all who listened. Travel invited new perspectives into her life, yet it was the simple act of spending time with her family that brought Arlene the most joy.
Her legacy lives on through her loving children, Cherie Barnes and husband Warren of Antlers, OK, and Dan Downs and wife Sharlene of Hartselle, AL. Their lives, a living testament to her nurturing love. Arlene was a beloved sister to Oliver Gibbs of Decatur, AL, and Allene Burns. She was loved by her sisters-in-law Linda Gibbs and Joan Gibbs.
Arlene's unwavering spirit is mirrored in the bright eyes of her grandchildren: Cameron and Aron Downs; Kristen Marth and spouse Evan; Valarie Lemmond and spouse Garrison; Marin Bormann and spouse Caleb; Morgan Shaw and spouse Tristen; along with Kurtis, Hannah, and Parker Barnes. Her great-grandchildren, Shiloh, Willow, and Lainey, will grow up with stories of their great-grandmother's grace and strength.
Preceded in death by her beloved husband Donald, her brother David Gibbs, brother-in-law Tom Burns, and her parents.
Arlene Downs's life was a testament to quiet strength and enduring love. She cultivated a garden of family and faith that continues to flourish. Her radiant smile and the echo of her laughter remain imprinted in the hearts of those she loved and left behind. Arlene's passage through life was marked by generosity, compassion, and an unwavering commitment to her Lord and Savior. Her family finds peace in knowing one day they will be reunited and rejoice with her in Heaven.
Graveside services will be held at 11 AM Saturday October 4, 2025 at Roselawn Cemetery in Decatur, Alabama.
