Dr. Betty W. Vaughan of Decatur, AL passed away on Wednesday, May 14, 2025. Visitation will be held on Saturday, May 17 from 10-11 AM at Roselawn Funeral home with a Celebration of Life Service to follow at 11 AM with Tripp Brogden officiating. She will be laid to rest at Courtland City Cemetery.
Dr. Vaughan is survived by her husband John W. Brandon, her children Mary Brown, Greg Hendricks, Sara Watkins and their spouses Brian Brown, David Kilpatrick, and Alan Watkins, her grandchildren Preston and Laura Beth Brown, Baylor Brown, Sam Watkins, and Mallie Watkins, and her great grandsons J.P., Carter and August. She is proceeded in death by her sister Mary Lee Vaughan, and her twin brother Billy Collins Vaughan.
She was born on July 29, 1935, in Courtland, AL. She was a 1953 graduate of Decatur High. From there Dr. Vaughan graduated from the University of Alabama and from the University of Alabama Medical College at the top of her class. She was the director of the Morgan County Health Department as well as Assistant State Health officer of Alabama for 30 years. Dr. Vaughan had a distinguished career advocating preventive healthcare for women and children. She volunteered for PACT and The Volunteer Center. After retiring, she served as a volunteer for DHR to review medical cases. She received numerous state and local awards for her dedication to public health. As monumental as her professional career was, she was most proud of her children, grandchildren, and great grandchildren. Dr. Betty was an avid reader, loved to cook and bake for others, loved crossword puzzles, Alabama football and spoiling her grandchildren.
The pallbearers will be Alan Watkins, Brian Brown, Preston Brown, Baylor Brown, Sam Watkins, Greg Hendricks, and Tom Meir.
