Cary Randolph Hotchkiss II, 81, died Friday, October 5, 2012 in Courtland. A lifelong resident of Courtland, he was born on August 23, 1931 to William Edgar Hotchkiss, Jr. and Mary Beard Hotchkiss, who preceded him in death. He was also preceded in death by his wife, Charlotte Shackelford Hotchkiss; and his sister, Marilyn Hotchkiss Lovelace; and his brother William Bankhead Hotchkiss.
Mr. Hotchkiss was a devoted husband and father. He was a graduate of Alabama A&M University and a retired farmer. Mr. Hotchkiss was a seventh generation direct descendent of President Thomas Jefferson, and an active member of the Monticello Association. He participated in the Getting Word project sponsored by the Monticello Association. He was a lifelong member of the Courtland Presbyterian Church, having served as deacon. Mr. Hotchkiss had a happy spirit, and was dearly loved by his family and all who knew him.
He is survived by his three children: Ellen Hampton (Walt), Houston, TX; Mike Hotchkiss, Vero Beach, FL; and Bankhead Bell (John), Leggett, TX. Three grandsons: John Straub, San Francisco, CA; Cary McCraine (Danielle), San Diego, CA; and Arthur Bell, Leggett, TX.
Pallbearers will be Johnny Tidwell, Burt Terry, Will Greene, John Huff, Charlie Hotchkiss, John Dupes, Cary McCraine and Arthur Bell.
Honorary pallbearers will be Billy Hudson, James Marsh, Rudy McCarley, Waylon Cross, David Bibb, Ron Terry, Bert Pippen and Bill Barnes.
Visitation will be 1:30 PM Wednesday, October 10, 2012 at the Courtland Presbyterian Church. The service will follow at 2:00 PM in the up-stairs sanctuary at the church with Rev. Scotty Letson officiating and Roselawn Funeral Home directing. Burial will be in the Garth Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to either Hospice of the Valley or the Courtland Presbyterian Church.
