Funeral for Charlie Sherman Jr., 79, of Decatur will be today at 2 p.m. at Fellowship Baptist Church with Rev. J.T. Copeland and Rev. Hank Smith officiating and Roselawn Funeral Home directing. The body will be at the church one hour before the service. Burial will be in Decatur City Cemetery.
Mr. Sherman, who died Thursday, June 16, 2011, at Huntsville Hospital, was born August 9, 1931, in Decatur. Mr. Sherman was a dedicated Christian and a member of Fellowship Baptist Church. He was the son of Charley and Nejebi Housey Sherman, immigrants from Zahlie, Lebanon. Mr. Sherman worked for 40 years at Sherman Grocery alongside his brother Jack Sherman. He was an avid fisherman, gardener and fixer upper. Mr. Sherman loved to spend time with his family and making sure they knew of their rich family heritage. He was the founder of Decatur Lockmaster and Safe Co. and Cullman Locksmith. He served in the U.S. Army during the Korean Conflict. He is preceded in death by his parents; brothers, Harvey, Ruben, Jack and Mike Sherman; sisters, Mary Alexander and Zerefie Fulmer; and his wife, Peggy Joyce Wise Sherman.
He is survived by his wife, Ola Sherman; three sons, Dulin (Sharon) Sherman, Windell (Traci) Sherman, both of Decatur, and Ronnie (Terry) Jones of Madison; one daughter, Vicky (Eddy) Belew of Priceville; and three sisters, Bee Bostany and Selma Domit, both of Birmingham, and Alma Lee Gnagy of Somas, Calif.; 12 grandchildren and 15 great-grandchildren.
Pallbearers will be Phillip Sherman, Thomas "Peewee" Sherman, Mark Johnson, Wesley Jones, Shawn Self and Brandon Jones.
Honorary Pallbearers will be Lewis Townson, Van Johnson, Mike Miller, Frankie Turner, and Deacon of Fellowship Baptist Church.
The family request memorials be sent to Fellowship Baptist Church Building Fund at 2709 Setter Ave., Decatur, AL 35601. The family would also like to express their sincere thanks to the Doctors and staff of Decatur General and Huntsville Hospitals.
