Charlotte Louise Orr Moores, lovingly known as “Charsh” to her grandchildren, was born on April 6, 1933, to Louise Wooten Orr and Rufus Wilson “Dub” Orr. She grew up in Decatur, Alabama and was in the first graduating class at Decatur High School. She attended Sweet Briar College before graduating from Vanderbilt University.
She married Jon Holman Moores of Fayetteville, Tennessee on September 3, 1955. Upon graduation, she held her first and only paid position for the state of Tennessee while her husband attended law school. She often joked that she helped write the Tennessee plumbing code, as she had participated in its development in some capacity.
Mrs. Moores was a longtime member of First Presbyterian Church where she served in many roles, including Deacon and Elder. She was also a member of Decatur Junior Service League, Decatur Assembly, and the Cotillion Club.
She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, and her brother, John Stratton Orr.
She is survived by her children, Jeanie Moores Tauss (Gary), Robert Wilson Moores (Robin), Jon Holman “Jack” Moores, Jr. (Kendal), Louise Moores Brown (Steve) and her grandchildren: Robert Wilson Moores, Jr., Jon Holman Moores III, Elizabeth Hess Massie, Jon Garrett Moores, William Webster Brown, Charlotte Jean Tauss, Landess Brown Smith and Charles Curran Moores. She has seven great-grandchildren and several more on the way. She is also survived by her brother, Rufus Wilson “Bud” Orr, Jr., nieces, nephews, and great nieces and nephews.
Among the many things for which Charsh will be remembered were her quick wit, her wonderful sense of humor, and her occasional delight in shocking others with an unexpected remark. She could do most anything she attempted -- cooking whatever game her family brought home, building or repairing needed items around the home, sewing a dress, and playing ball with the boys on a bad hip.
She loved her children and grandchildren with unwavering devotion and gave them the very best of herself. She was the rock and matriarch of her family — irreplaceable, deeply loved, and will be profoundly missed. Her family is grateful to God for the gift of her long life and for the love, strength, and legacy that will continue on through the generations of family she cherished so dearly.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Neighborhood Christian Center or the Delano Park Conservancy. Graveside services will be held on Thursday, May 21 at 2:00 at Roselawn Cemetery, Decatur, Alabama. A Celebration of Life will be held immediately following at Banksy Venue.
