Dorothy Deeds

Dorothy Hazlett Deeds died Thursday, May 5, 2011 at Decatur General Hospital, Decatur, Alabama. She was born 10-30-1928 to James Joseph and Clara Fisher Hazlett in Latrobe, Pennsylvania. Dorothy graduated from Latrobe High School with classmate Fred “Mister Rogers” Rogers and underclassman Arnold Palmer.

She graduated from Latrobe Hospital School of Nursing in 1949 and married John Miller Deeds, Jr. of Ligonier, Pennsylvania the same year. The Deeds family lived in Miami, Florida, Decatur, Alabama, Cedar Rapids, Iowa, and her “beloved” Ft. Worth, Texas for 28 years, before relocating to Decatur, Alabama in 2002, to be near family.

Dorothy was a Registered Nurse with the neo-natal unit of Mt. Sinai Hospital in Miami, Florida, and among others, Decatur General Hospital, Decatur, Alabama, in the late 1960’s. While in Ft. Worth, she was a teacher’s assistant with special needs children.

She was a member of Decatur First United Methodist Church, the Wesley Fellowship Sunday School Class and United Methodist Women’s Circle.

Preceded in death by her parents, her husband of 56 years, John Miller Deeds, Jr., and her sister Ruth Hazlett Gary of Castro Valley, California. She is survived by her sons John Miller Deeds III (Carlyn) of Decatur, Alabama, Todd Lowery Deeds (Rebecca) of Albuquerque, New Mexico; grandchildren Ryan Todd Deeds, Elizabeth Deeds Choc (John) also of Albuquerque, New Mexico; Rebecca Deeds Rains (Geoff) of Edmond, Oklahoma, Amie Kathryn Deeds, James Connor Deeds and Sarah Liaghat of Albuquerque, New Mexico. Great-grandchildren Matthew Deeds, Jacob and Ethan Choc of Albuquerque, New Mexico; many nieces and nephews and special “adopted” daughter Bridget O’Connor Willis (Kelly) of Arlington, Texas.

A memorial service will be held on Monday, May 9, 2011 at 11:00 am, Decatur First United Methodist Church with visitation beginning at 10:00 am. Memorials may be made to First Grace Child Development Center, First United Methodist Church, 805 Canal Street, Decatur, Alabama 25601 or a charity of your choice.
