Funeral for James Clay Smith, 86, of Decatur will be Thursday, May 9, 2013, at 1 p.m. at The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints wtih Bishop Roger Brown officiating and Roselawn Funeral Home directing. Burial will be in Roselawn Cemetery. Visitation will be Wednesday from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. at the funeral home and Thursday from noon to 1 p.m. at the church.
Mr. Smith, who died Sunday, May 5, 2013, at Huntsville Hospital, was born September 18, 1926, in Decatur to Joseph Smith and Ammie Welch Smith. He was a U.S. Navy veteran of World War II and the Korean War. He retired from the U.S. Navy and Civil Service (NASA). Mr. Smith was a member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. He was a loving father, grandfather and great-grandfather. He was a role model for us all. We will forever remember him.
He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Delores Smith; one daughter, Patricia Vincent; four brothers and four sisters; and one granddaughter, Amy Hull.
Survivors include two sons, Ron Smith (Debby) and Darrell Smith (Dianna), both of Decatur; two sisters, Eleanor Lockley and Audrey Hood, both of Birmingham; 11 grandchildren and 13 great-grandchildren; and numerous nieces, nephews and cousins.
