

James Thomas “Tommy” Williams was born January 26, 1948 to Johnnie Hoover Williams and Mitchell Williams. Tommy grew up in Decatur and graduated with distinction from Decatur High School. He worked during high school at The Decatur Daily to finance his college education. He received an appointment to the United States Military Academy but he elected to attend the Georgia Institute of Technology where he graduated with an industrial management degree. Tommy had a fascination with radio science and learned the Morse code at an early age. While in high school he built a HAM radio and the family television. He continued his radio acumen working for RCA and Motorola after his college graduation. Learning was a focus in Tommy’s life and he attended the University of Mexico where he became fluent in Spanish. His experience in Mexico cultivated a high regard for the Mexican people.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Mitchell and Johnnie Williams. He is survived by his brother, Mitch Williams, (Vail) and his sister, Becky Wakefield, (Brian) along with three nieces and one nephew. A private memorial at Roselawn Cemetery will be observed later. The family wishes to express their sincere appreciation to the staff at NHC Moulton for their excellent care. Tommy had a special bond with the NHC caretakers and he was grateful for their compassion.
