I was sadden to hear about the passing of Big John - he was quite a character known to all in the archery and hunting industry. I first met John about 20 years ago shortly after I'd been hired to run the Archery Trade Association. I remember setting up a visit by calling John and I swear I never heard anyone talk louder over the phone.

We arrived at Summit Tree Stands and were greeted by John, John Jr. and another of John's son's I don't remember (sorry). John was a consummate gentleman (he went out of his way to accommodate my wife who traveled with me) and host and spent considerable time letting us know not only all about tree stands but what that segment of our industry needed to be successful. We enjoyed a very informative visit but also one where he challenged me to address many issues of importance and concern. For years after that visit, John would see me and ask about my wife and how I was doing in the job before he would lean into me face and ask me about the priorities about which he had great passion and conviction.

After Summit sold, I didn't see John as much and I missed his presence as he made our trade association better and our industry better. He will be missed. I had the opportunity to work with leaders of bigger, wealthier companies, leaders from companies whose brands were household names and leaders who had quite a following in the industry. John stood among those leaders as an equal in every way but what, to me, set him apart more than his leadership was that he was a self-made man and his own man - always. Rest well, Big John.
