
Funeral for Maggie Peggy Owens, 88, of Decatur will be Wednesday, May 9, 2012, at 1 p.m. at Roselawn Funeral Home Chapel with the Reverend Steven Little officiating. Burial will be in Decatur City Cemetery. Visitation will be one hour prior to the service.
Ms. Owens, who died Sunday, May 6, 2012, at Decatur General Hospital, was born January 1, 1924, in Hillsboro. She was a graduate of Alabama State University and taught school at Moulton Heights Elementary and Cotaco School. She was invited to be the first black teacher in the white school system in Morgan County because of her high character and skills as a great educator. Ms. Owens was on the Steward Board and Benevolent Board at Garner Memorial CME Church, Decatur, and former church secretary and a member at Garner Memorial for 60-plus years. She was preceded in death by her mother, Lou Ella Owens Watkins; and her grandmother, Maggie Owens.
Survivors include her cousins, Emma Hill of Hillsboro and Evelyn Moore Cohn of Decatur; a host of other cousins and friends; and special friend, Shirley Hammond of Decatur.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Garner Memorial CME Church, 401 Cherry St. NW, Decatur, AL 35601.
