Graveside service for Judy Durham, 90, formerly of Decatur, will be Friday, May 20, 2011, at 11 a.m. at Decatur City Cemetery with the Rev. Dr. Terry Greer, Senior Pastor of First United Methodist Church officiating and Roselawn Funeral Home directing.
Mrs. Durham, who died Tuesday, May 17, 2011, in Birmingham, was born September 27, 1920, in Decatur. She was a native and longtime resident of Decatur. Since 2003, she lived in Birmingham in Town Village and Greenbriar at the Altamont retirement facilities. She was a 1938 graduate of Decatur High School. Judy worked for the Army Air Force Training Command in Courtland during World War II. As a lifelong member of Decatur's First United Methodist Church, she served her church as a member of its Board of Stewards, as a children's Sunday School teacher, and as a Youth Counselor. She was a member of the Decatur Junior League and served as a volunteer for many years with the Decatur General Hospital Auxiliary. When asked on her 90th birthday what single event came to mind as she reflected on her long and fruitful life, she answered without hesitation that it was getting out of school early one day to go outside to watch Charles Lindberg fly over Decatur during his barnstorming national tour after his trans-Atlantic solo flight. She will be remembered by her family and friends as a devout Christian and a kind, gracious lady with a big heart and a keen sense of humor. She was preceded in death by her husband, Robert O. Durham; and her parents, Mr. and Mrs. Lawrence R. Jacks.
Survivors include one son, Lawrence B. Durham (Anne) of Birmingham; grandchildren, Margaret D. Anderson (Todd) and Bradley F. Durham (Heather), both of Birmingham; great-grandchildren, Emily and Thomas Anderson and Olivia and Luke Durham, all of Birmingham; sister-in-law, Ellen Johnson of Athens; and numerous cousins, nephews and nieces.
Memorials may be made to First United Methodist Church, 805 Canal Street NE, Decatur, AL 35601-1723.
