
Norman Eugene Horton passed away on February 10, 2013. He was born in Deatsville on August 9, 1936 to Robert Lee Horton and Alcie Mae Holly Horton. Mr. Horton graduated from Holtville High School and Howard College. After receiving a degree in accounting, he worked for Ernst and Young and continued to live in Birmingham. Later he left the accounting firm and became the founding partner of the Budget Rental Car in Birmingham, Huntsville and Jackson, Mississippi. Mr. Horton owned and operated parking garages in downtown Birmingham and was active in land development and real estate. He was a member of St. John's Episcopal Church. Mr. Horton was an avid sports fan and had seen all 47 Super Bowls; including the last one that he saw while hospitalized.
After being diagnosed with multiple sclerosis, he sold all business enterprises and moved to Turkey for recuperation on the Mediterranean Sea. After remission, he came back to the United States and was active in land development in Gulf Shores and Orange Beach. He moved back to his hometown of Millbrook, Alabama, and worked for the State of Alabama - first as a bank examiner and later as an examiner for the State Department of Education. He married Dr. Mary Landers in 1992 and moved to Decatur, Alabama.
Mr. Horton was predeceased by his parents and one brother, Charles Vernon Horton. He is survived by his wife, Mary Landers Horton; sons, Arthur Eugene Horton, Birmingham, Brandon Landers (Allegra), Murfreesboro, Tennessee; sister, Hazel Weaver (Wiley), Millbrook; nephews, Dr. Randall Weaver (Chedabha), Parker Landers, Decatur, Tennesse, and Matthew Landers (Roxanne), San Diego, California; niece, Dana Landers Wright (Bryan), Hartselle; great-niece, Holly Weaver; great-nephews, Robert Weaver and Zachary Wright; brothers-in-law, John W. Landers (Tresh), Decatur, Tennessee, and Bob Landers, Decatur, He is also survived by an "adopted" daughter, Maria Garcia and three grandsons, Christopher Garcia, Jesse Garcia and Rodolfo Garcia.
A memorial service will be held at St. John's Episcopal Church on Thursday at 1 p.m. with visitation following in the Parish Hall of the church. The family asks that in lieu of flowers, a memorial gift be made to the scholarship fund of the Episcopah Church Camp (Camp McDowell, 105 Delong Road, Nauvoo, AL 35578).
