Funeral for Richard Ned Smith, 90, of Hartselle will be Wednesday, September 14, 2011, at 11 a.m. at Roselawn Funeral Home with Michael Mason officiating. Burial will be in Decatur City Cemetery. Visitation will be tonight from 6 to 9 at the funeral home.
Mr. Smith, who died Sunday, September 11, 2011, at Decatur General Hospital, was born August 16, 1921, in Chambersburg, Pa., to Howard L. and Mary Elizabeth Bitner Smith. He served in World War II and Korea. He retired from the U.S. Army in 1961 and worked as a missile maintenance technician for the U.S. Army for 20 more years. After retirement, he and his wife traveled extensively and camped. He was the last surviving sibling.
He is survived by his wife of 61 years, Tess Smith; one son, Newman Richardson (Joan); two grandchildren, Margaret Hare of Atlanta and Randy Richardson of Kennesaw, Ga.; two great-grandchildren, Payton and Sophie Richardson; nephews, Danny (Kay) Smith, Richard Smith, Andy Smith, Mike Smith, and former daughter-in-law, Kathy Fortner.
