Sandra Kay Nunley

Sandra Kay Nunley (nee Brown) was born on February 23, 1937, in Alamance County in Burlington, North Carolina. With extended family in Yadkin County and Elkin, North Carolina, she was the only child of William Gray Brown and Mary Elizabeth McCollis. Brown Mitchell (nee White). Her first marriage to an Air Force airman saw her moving to Honolulu, Hawaii, near Hickam Air Force Base where her first two children, daughter Wanda and son Howard, were born. In 1960, after her mother's passing resulted in both heartbreak and inherited land, Sandra moved to Huntsville, Alabama. There, on Governors Drive, she and her second husband operated and owned a mobile home park known as "Whispering Pines" where she welcomed her third child, son Duane. Sandra's biography would not be complete without also mentioning her beloved Angel, a Siamese cat she treasured in this time. Sandra is remembered for her keen business sense, and she worked many long hours. Years later, the new interstate 565 was slated to run through the middle of her property at Whispering Pines. After changing her last name to Nunley for her third husband, Sandra sold her land to Madison County and bought a horse farm in Plevna, Alabama. The new horse ranch was named "Castle Hill Farms." Sandra loved raising horses. She later expanded to breed race-winning quarter horses. Her children, stepchildren, and grandchild brushed and rode the horses and named the foals. Her grandchildren have memories of riding horses and picking persimmons in the woods. In retirement, Sandra moved to Harvest, Alabama, where she sold insurance part-time and spoiled her Siamese cats. She took up square dancing and later ballroom dancing every weekend, which she loved. While her life was often challenging, it was also lively and full of adventures. After spending her last few years in a memory care home, she passed away on July 25, 2026.

Sandra is survived by a daughter, Wanda Kay Whyte, two granddaughters, Rachael Meghan Allbritten Dixon (Doug) and Rebecca Kay Krueger and five great-grandchildren: Nicklaus, William, Rosina Kay, Emery Kay and Dean.

She was preceded in death by two sons: Steven Howard Wolfe, Jr. and Duane Carl Nunley.

Pallbearers will be Ed Campbell and others.
