

Tim was born on September 19th, 1958 in Decatur to Howard B. Smith and Sovola Mizell Smith. He spent the majority of his life in Decatur. From 17 years of age and onward, he was gainfully employed with a knack for anything mechanical. His passion for Heating, Ventilation, and Air Conditioning (HVAC) led to his employment on Redstone Arsenal for more than 40 years. Tim served in the Alabama National Guard and was honorably discharged in 1982.
He was an active member of the Somerville Road Church of Christ in Decatur and demonstrated the impact of Christ’s grace in his life through his kind and compassionate heart and extraordinary love for his fellow man.
Tim leaves behind a legacy of advocacy for social change, serving as longtime President and lifetime member of the Alabama Family Rights Association (ALFRA). Tim advocated for legislation to promote his belief that children need both parents, even after divorce. He also advocated for workers’ rights through service in his local trade union.
He is survived by his son, Jacob Smith (Taylor); his granddaughter, Noah Kate Smith; his brother, Jerry Smith (Pam); his sister, Susan Patterson (Stanley); his nephew, Zack Patterson; his niece, Erin Patterson; and his niece, Chelsea Smith.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Howard and Sovola Smith, also of Decatur.
Visitation will be held Saturday, March 14, from 10 a.m. to 12 p.m. at Roselawn Funeral Home with funeral services to follow immediately following the visitation.
He will be missed by his family and all those whose lives he has touched with his gentle spirit.
