Valere "Val" (Powers) Hood of Decatur, Alabama passed away peacefully on October 10, 2025, at the age of 77. She was born and raised in Flat Rock, Michigan. After attending Central Michigan University and nursing school, Val worked as an R.N., a career she was passionate about for over 40 years.
In the 1980s, Val and her family moved to Decatur, where she worked predominantly at Parkway Medical Center. Following retirement, she became involved in hospice care because she said she had a soft spot for "the older folks," even as she became one herself. She enjoyed caring for the sick, watching the evening news, nature walks, shopping at thrift stores, good laughs, old Motown music, and good food (but not refried beans or goat cheese).
Val is survived by her daughters, Kristie Jane Cummins (Tim), and Karen Hood Bogue (Clay); her grandchildren, Mackenzie Bogue, Landon Bogue, Madelyn Forrester, and Abigail Cummins; her sisters, Jane Powers (Roy), Trish Powers MacDonell (Len), and Kathy Powers; and her niece, Hilary Varner, and nephews, Derek MacDonell, Chris Keil, and John Powers II; as well as the many friends she made along the way and the patients she'd made it a priority to care for.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Herschel Hood; her parents, John and Thelma Powers; and her brother, Dan Powers.
Val will be laid to rest at a private graveside service on Tuesday, October 21, 2025, at Roselawn Cemetery in Decatur, Alabama, with Larry Culp expected to officiate. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Hospice of the Valley in Decatur, Alabama.
