Thinking of you and your family and keeping you all in our prayers. May our Heavenly Father comfort you all during this sad loss of Lindon. He was a “special” neighborhood child growing up on 10th Avenue. He played with my younger brother. We have fond memories of Lindon. We loved him mom and all of his family.

We are so sorry for your loss. We will miss Lindon terribly.

Dear Jane
I was sad to hear of Lindon's passing. I don't have to tell you what a great guy he was. What you may not know is what a great manager he was. I was fortunate enough to have him as a boss when I worked on the Arsenal about 10 years ago. He was always fair-minded, kind, and had a brilliant sense of humor. He will always remain as one of my favorite bosses. I hope you find comfort in good memories and the company of family and friends.

Who was LINDON, also known as DADDY & POP?
He was so many things.

He was so very intelligent! There was nothing he could not figure out how to do. He had an incredible memory and could name players and quote statistics from Alabama football games 60 years ago. He loved history and was amazing with numbers.
He was quick-witted and never, ever missed an opportunity with a pun. Sometimes he was just plain corny. But he loved it.

He was resilient, overcoming much in his life to become the amazing man he was. He taught us by example. He was ethical; always putting honesty above any self-gain. He would rather give something away than sell it. And if he did sell something, he made sure the buyer knew everything that might possibly be wrong with whatever he was selling. Once when he went to buy a lawn mower from a lady, he told her she was not asking what the mower was worth, giving her more than the asking price. This is just the way he was.

We laughed at him because he was so “set in his ways.” He wasn’t really interested in trying new things. When it came to eating out, about the only place he went was Cracker Barrel. He always ordered the same thing—meatloaf, mashed potatoes with gravy, green beans, okra and cornbread. Why change, he knew what he liked. For breakfast, it was the Smokehouse breakfast or maybe, just maybe on occasional, he'd have peach cakes.

He was a devoted husband who loved my mother dearly. He was forever faithful, tender, compassionate, forgiving, occasionally stubborn, but always her friend loving her unconditionally to the end! Mom was so proud to have him as her husband as she told her friends so many times. They married young—when Mom was 18 and Dad was 21. Mom admits they did not have a clue as to what they were doing, but they loved each other and were committed to each other and continued to love each other more every year. They would have celebrated their 47th wedding anniversary on September 25, 2011.

He was a man full of love not only for his wife but for his entire family. Always giving big bear hugs and calling me “Daddy’s Darling.”  He always put us first whether it meant driving the oldest car, doing without so we could have what we wanted, or giving up job promotions so we could grow up in one place. Once while working a couple of weeks in Ohio many years ago, he drove all the way home on a Thursday night so he could watch Matt’s first football game only to have to return to Ohio on Friday morning. He attended all of our events always cheering us on. He coached many of Matt’s football and baseball teams and my softball teams. These are a few of the many ways in which our dad showed us his unconditional love. He was our hero.  Many years later, Nana would be amazed at all the tiny details that he could remember about Matt and me as we were growing up. And he loved his daughter-in-law Kim and his son-in-law David with a complete love. They were as much his children as were Matt and I. He was so proud of his family but he never took them for granted. He knew he had been blessed by God and never failed to thank Him and give Him the glory.

One of the first things that people who knew Pop told us was how very much he loved his grandchildren and how he would talk about them. Some teased that it seemed to be a “toss-up” between his love for his grandchildren or Alabama football. Of course there was really no contest, even knowing how much he loved and enjoyed the University of Alabama. Yep, Pop loved his grandchildren—Wade, his first grandchild and only grandson. He worried about Wade at times but had confidence in the fact that as Wade grew up, he would be fine. He just knew that Wade would make it through and grow into a good man. Reagan, his first granddaughter and his Bama Buddy. He loved her determined and competitive spirit. And he loved hearing her sing. He was so moved when, after being diagnosed with leukemia, she sang his favorite hymn Amazing Grace at the school talent show and dedicated it to him. He was able to attend the show and had tears in his eyes as he watched her perform. Sydney, he loved her beautiful eyes, her red hair, her silliness, and watching her play basketball. Jane Ryan, who was a special delight to him and whom he always said “would surprise us all” with her accomplishments. He loved her curly hair and the fact that she “hopped” like a rabbit constantly.  I can still hear his voice saying, “Hey Buddy to Wade” or “Hey Darling” or “Hey Angel” to the girls. 

He made a special drink (which was lemon-lime Gatorade) and Jane Ryan started calling it “Pop’s drink.” Soon all the grandchildren referred to it as Pop’s drink. He always said it was a secret recipe. Everything he did was planned around the grandchildren, just as he did for Matt and me as we were growing up. He attended every ballgame (and often practices) and every activity in which they were involved. All of the pictures we have of him at all the activities were pictures of him with his video camera. He never wanted to forget a moment of their lives. Each of them has such special memories of time spent with Pop. They all had a special personal bond with him and they adored and loved him so much and always will!

Pop was tenderhearted towards the most helpless of God’s creatures. He was known to make sacrifices even for our pets over the years. A perfect example of this was the way in which he treated his and Mom’s cat, Claudie. She always wanted to lie on the bed down beside his feet. He would not be able to turn over when he wanted without disturbing her. No problem…he would just sleep on his back rather than risk making her unhappy. Every morning, he and Claudie had a routine. She would follow him upstairs (or actually he followed her) where she would receive her daily “head rub” from him before his workout. Yes, at age 67, Pop still could do at least 50 sit-ups and 50 push-ups each day.  

He was an amazing friend. This was obvious by the number of people that attended his funeral, from co-workers from many years ago to friends from his childhood. If you were his friend you had a friend for life! So many of these friends shared their wonderful and loving memories of Pop, which meant so much to us.  We continue to hear stories shared by neighbors, co-workers and friends of things he did for them that we, of course, never knew about. They spoke of thoughtful, encouraging notes they had received from him over the years and many of them spoke of their love for Pop. Pop was deeply loved! 

To us he was close to perfect but he knew better! He knew he was far from perfect, that he was a sinner, and that he indeed needed a Savior. And he knew without a doubt that Jesus Christ was that Savior and that God’s promises are true. He had put his faith and trust in Him and knew that through Christ’s death on the cross that the penalty of sin had been paid. He was forgiven through no merit of his own, but totally through God’s grace alone. And he knew that when he died that he would be in God’s presence for eternity. So the MOST IMPORTANT thing that Pop gave his family was the assurance that not only is he now with our Lord, but that someday we, through God’s grace to us, will see him again. We WILL see him again! What a gift and what a promise. 

I was indeed blessed to have this man as my daddy. I will always love you, Pop, and I will miss you deeply until we are together again.

 I worked with Lindon several years ago and for a number of years. Some of my fondest times with Linden were our "pun wars!" We had such fun. He always had my greatest respect
