William Larry Denmark

August 18, 1937May 31, 2021

William “Larry” Denmark, age 83, passed away at home surrounded by his family on May 31, 2021. Larry was born in Perry, Florida to William “Bill” & Johnnie “Mae” Denmark.

He was a humble man, despite his many career accomplishments. Larry served in intelligence for the United States Air Force from 1955-1959. He spent the next 18 years working at a paper mill in Perry before changing careers. He worked as a welder and fitter before eventually being promoted to construction engineer project management positions.

His new career took him to the TriCities, WA where he met and married the love of his life, Cathy Marie Craig in 1982. The two would go on to move 16 times spanning the globe, collecting dear friends and stories along the way. Larry loved music, both playing the guitar and singing karaoke, as well as motorcycle riding later in life. In the quiet moments, he could be found completing a crossword or sudoku with ease.

Larry’s character and life impacted all those he encountered. He was a good man, husband, father, friend and extraordinary storyteller. To know him was to love him. Larry & Cathy attended Westmeade Baptist Church in Decatur and were members of the local Elks Lodge. His gentle presence in his family will be deeply missed.

Larry is survived by his wife of 39 years, Cathy, his sons, Larry Denmark (Laura) and Lucas Denmark (Stephanie), and his daughters, Audrey Langford (Zach), Angela Denmark and granddaughter, Latisha Denmark. His grandchildren and great grandchildren, who will miss "Papa", are Ava Buford (Angela), Lola Mae and Leo Langford (Audrey), Jazzmyne and Kyle Jones (Latisha) and Waylon Hill (Latisha). He also leaves behind two brothers, Ralph and Richard Denmark as well as dear nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.

His family and close friends will celebrate and honor Larry’s life with an intimate graveside service on Friday, June 4, 2021 at Roselawn Cemetery, Decatur, Alabama.

Larry and Cathy were our neighbors when they lived in Pennsylvania. I was about 10 years old when they moved in with Latisha, Larry Dean, and Audrey. Lucas was born during that time and I adored him. Over the next several years, they became like family to me. I frequently helped Cathy around the house and with the children. When they moved to Maine, I stayed with them for a whole month and they took me on all kinds of adventures and taught me to water ski on their boat. Larry was always so kind and generous. I will always remember him as a true southern gentleman. I remember him playing music and singing. Much love to Cathy and the children.

I loved to listen to my grandfather play the guitar and sing. He loved playing and singing so much. His laughter was definitely a spirit lifter. He always knew what to say at any give situation. He loved above and beyond. I'll never forget sitting on his knee as a little bitty girl, he would tell me you can do anything you want too with Jesus, he will guide you through anything. Amen. I loved watching him, always tried to follow him anywhere just to learn to do what he was doing around the house, around the cars, boat so I know how to do things myself. The experiences grandpa took me on is and always be the most amazing life times of my life. And that I'm thankful for. I know what grandpa would say right now to me. He say young lady this to will pass, to stay strong and have good courage for I'll always be a phone call away but now the phone call is me looking up at the saying hey come play me a tune, sit and talk with me. You are so truly missed, may you have your questions answered and embraced by all. I Love you so much. Til we meet again

The Denmark family has been a wonderful part of our family since before I was born. I remember looking forward to their visits in Washington state, as they came from Egypt, Alabama, and other places they had lived. Larry always had a calm and loving demeanor. He was like-able by all. I will miss him, but I also know we will see him again. I love you, Denmark family.

I will miss Larry’s yearly family newsletters. He always added a spark of humor that not only matched his zest for life but had me eagerly looking forward to the next one! I will always remember his smile, his laugh, and his love for his family and friends. I immediately felt like he was a good friend the first moment I met him.
Yes, the world is a little dimmer but what a bright light he gave to us while in our lives! We can’t wait to see you again...isn’t it wonderful to know that we will?
