Linda Mae Carter was born on October 1, 1942 to Frances Stewart and Edward Henderson in Brooklyn, NY. She was the youngest daughter of 14 children through marriage; her parents, eldest sister, and brothers have all gone on before her. Linda attended middle school until her marriage to David Carter in 1956; their union produced five children. As a homemaker, Linda maintained an immaculate home and her children were always very polite and smartly dressed. After marriage, Linda dedicated over thirty years of her life to the care and education of people living with mental disabilities at Willowbrook State School.

When she wasn’t throwing fabulous family functions, Linda loved to travel. Whether it was visiting her friend in Key West, or cruising around the Mediterranean Islands, Linda never stopped moving. She loved life and the people lucky enough to share in hers. Her no-nonsense attitude made people respect her, but it was her love and air of excellence that made them stay. Her battle with Alzheimer’s Disease only increased her contagious laughter and she remained in good spirits until she passed away peacefully on May 15, 2018. It is fitting she left us only two days after Mother’s Day, surrounded by all of her children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren, for she was a mother to many of us.

Linda is survived by her older sister Barbara and her children: Loretta, Denise, David, Pamela and Edward. She is beloved by all of her grandchildren: Shonte’, Irie, Malachi, Sibnavus, Sean, Pierre, Emerald, Dennis, Aleyah and Jaden; as well as, her great-grandchildren: Amari, Yahani, Kowi, Yehonatan, Kosmo, Saimya, and Pierre Jr. Linda loved her family. She was our very own Wonder Woman. And although she will be missed, her legacy lives on in all of us.
