Janet was born in Philadelphia, PA to Joseph Kennedy and Dorothy Kemme on August 11, 1950. She grew up in Philadelphia and attended Cardinal Dougherty High School.
She then went on to Merrimack College, where she met the love of her life, Tommy Smith. They graduated from Merrimack in 1972. Janet and Tommy were married on June 16, 1973 and celebrated over 50 wonderful years together. They lived in Florida for many years and enjoyed many trips, near and far, but Janet said her favorite vacations were the annual beach trips to the Jersey Shore - she enjoyed those weeks every summer growing up, and was able to share them with her children and grandchildren through the years. She loved the beach as much as she loved surprise trips and fun times at home… she created countless SmittyWorld excellent adventures for us all, which we will never forget!
Janet worked as a flight attendant for National Airlines after college. She and Tommy lived in Miami, FL during those years and took advantage of many opportunities to not only host visitors but to travel together and with friends. After her time with National Airlines, they decided to move back up north… Nashua, NH, to Billerica, MA, and then Tewksbury, MA. Janet worked for the Town of Tewksbury for many years in several offices of the town government, and ultimately retired as the Town Treasurer in 2011. Janet and Tommy returned to live in Florida in their retirement years.
Janet is survived by her loving husband, Thomas Smith of Deerfield Beach, FL; daughter Jillian Smith and her husband David Gilman of Cape Elizabeth, ME; daughter Brianne Smith of East Boston, MA; sister Patricia Dahill and her husband Ted of North Smithfield, RI; and grandchildren Kennedy and Zackery Gilman of Cape Elizabeth, ME.
Janet has said that she was happiest when her children were happy… and that was even more true for her grandchildren. Sharing joy with Kennedy and Zackery were among her best moments in her later years - games, swimming, trips to Disney. Our family has been blessed to share many good times and many smiles over the years, and we will always be grateful for those memories.
Janet left a final message to her family and friends, which embodies the loving character for which she will always be remembered:
There is nothing more beautiful than a person that goes out of their
way to make life beautiful for others.
Do a good deed for someone anonymously!
In lieu of flowers or monetary donations, Janet’s final request is just the good deed! She wishes for her memory to be a happy one… “happy memories that I leave behind when life is done.”
