Born in Bexleyheath, Kent, England to loving parents Florence and James Fothergill, Julie grew up and attended school and college in Gravesend, England. Julie began her career in London, England working in hotel administration. Her desire to speak Italian inspired her to move to Milan, Italy. Julie immersed herself in the Italian culture by working as a Nanny, which also satisfied her love of children. Once fully fluent in Italian, she moved on to become a translator in Rimini, Italy. Following this she served as an administrator for the United Nations-Food and Agriculture (FAO), World Health Organization Agency in Rome. Six years later, Julie immigrated to Montreal, Quebec, Canada where she joined the United Nations-International Civil Aviation Organization. This is where she met the love of her life, Stephen T. O’Farrell. They married on June 24, 1971 in England. They moved to Toronto, Ontario in 1976 during which time Julie accompanied Steve on his work related travel across Canada. Always by his side, Julie was actively involved in community, arts, and corporate events. Julie and Steve relocated to Miami, Florida during which time Steve’s career required them to travel extensively throughout Latin America and Africa. Julie continued to actively participate in numerous corporate events, both in Miami and many countries around the world. Being the loving and warm woman she was, Julie made friends all over the world. Her favorite destination was Costa del Sol, Spain, where Julie and Steve vacationed for the past 45 years. Julie and Steve decided to retire in South Florida and pursue their main interest in cruising around the Caribbean and Mediterranean frequently. Their travels also took them annually to England to be with Julie’s parents and much loved cousins Barbara Cook and Betty Smith. Julie cherished their children Linda, Carol, and Steven and was the proud Godmother to Mandy.
Julie is the much loved stepmother to Susan and Michael and cherished grandmother to Jason, Lauren, Michelle, Grace and Matthew.
Julie faced her final months of life courageously as she struggled with cancer. To the very end Steve was by her side. Julie will continue to be cherished by her many friends and family both near and far. May she rest in peace and always be remembered as a strong and loving woman that touched the lives of many in both her home community and around the world.
