Ada Lois Yates, 93, passed away on February 4, 2014 at her home while surrounded by her loving family. Ada was born on February 8, 1920 in Carter, OK to Willie Harold and Ethel Bessie (McIntyre) Boyd.
After graduating high school, Ada continued her education, receiving a bachelor’s in education. During WWII, our meticulous Ada, worked at Douglas Aircraft and the New York shipyards as an inspector. Later she would go on and devote her career as an elementary school teacher for the next 30 + years, until her retirement in 1975. Ada loved working, especially in her flower garden and also enjoyed sewing, reading and spending time with her loving family and precious grandchildren. She never showed much interest in any sports until the OKC Thunder came along, and it was then that she could tell you all about the players, stats and what games they won or lost. Needless to say, she became one of the Thunder’s biggest fans. She taught Sunday school for many years and was a member of the JOY club and Searchers at Meadowood Baptist Church.
Ada was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Joe Foy Yates; son, Billie Joe Yates; brothers, Eugene and Harold Boyd. Survivors include her children; Gary Yates, Nancy Shackelford (Bob), Rebecca Gregory (Roger); grandchildren, Megan Bruner (Dan), Chris Shackelford (Emily), Roberta Emerson, Rachel Evans (Duncan), Renee Emerson, Nathan Emerson, Nehemiah-Joe Emerson (Courtney); great-grandchildren, Ben and Evie Bruner, Hayden and Ethan Shackelford, Barrett Emerson, Addison Adams, Emily, Hannah and Gracie Wheeler, Hazelynn Evans, Zakk and Kylee Joe White; sister, Madeline Ware.
In lieu of flowers donations may be made to the Oklahoma Baptist Children’s Home. The family will be receiving guests on Wednesday, from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. at the Bill Eisenhour Southeast Funeral Home.
