Cherie Hasty, 59, died unexpectedly July 30, 2012. A long-time resident of central Oklahoma, she was born in San Antonio, TX, on November 28, 1952, to Madeline and Pete Humphrey. Cherie was preceded in death by her parents.
Cherie was married for 35 years to Don Hasty. They met when Don was in the 8th grade. He admits to falling in love with her the moment he laid eyes on her, although Cherie was a bit slower to catch on. When Cherie finally came to her senses as an adult, they started dating and were married June 17, 1977. Together, they had two sons, Sam, 33, and Clay, 29. Cherie would be the first to tell you that two of her greatest accomplishments were raising her sons with Don.
Soon after Cherie and Don were married, Cherie got a job as the receptionist at the Sonic corporate office. Given her enthusiasm and bright spirit, Cherie quickly moved into other positions at the company and finally landed in Sonic’s marketing department – a perfect fit for both Cherie and her employer!
Always a kid at heart, one of Cherie’s finest contributions and sources of pride, was her creation of Sonic’s Wacky Pack children’s program. She delighted in helping shape the program into one that focuses on healthy educational interaction between children and adults. Due in large part to Cherie’s influence, the Wacky Pack program has been recognized nationally by youth education organizations for its unique qualities. Cherie’s 35-year association with Sonic also included a decades-long affiliation with C3, Sonic’s Kansas City-based partner on the Wacky Pack program.
Cherie is survived by husband Don, son Sam, and his partner, Jessica, son Clay, and his wife, Sarah, plus her four-legged son Petey; her sisters Paige Case, Sonja Tompkins and Tami (Sam) Copple, nine nieces and eight nephews. Additionally, Cherie is survived by six grandchildren, Kayla, Julie, Isaac, Jake, Marlee and Cash. The two youngest, Marlee and Cash, were especially precious to Cherie. In fact, she often remarked how little Marlee had both Don and Sam wrapped around her finger.
Those who knew Cherie know of her capacity to draw you in. She touched many people because of her fun-loving, compassionate, playful soul. She had the capacity to make the ordinary extraordinary and the little things in life exciting. Cherie was one of those rare people who never saw ugliness or negativity in people or situations and instead, found the humor or the lesson to be learned in life’s joys and sorrows. To Cherie, life was her party and it is her goodness and lively spirit that will be missed by all who knew her.
A memorial service will be held at 2:00 p.m., Thursday, August 2, 2012 at the Sooner Baptist Church, 5824 SE 15th St., Midwest City, OK. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made payable to Wilson PTA, a non-profit established to extend learning opportunities to children who attend Wilson Elementary and Arts Integration School. The address is 2215 N.Walker, Oklahoma City, OK 73103. Please note: Cherie Hasty Memorial.
