Eugene “Gene” Milam Workman, 87, Del City, passed away on Friday, May 17, 2019. He was born to Eugene M. and Trixie I. Workman in Charleston, AR, on January 15, 1932. The family moved to Ft. Smith, AR where Gene attended junior and senior high school. Gene was an Army veteran of the Korean War.
Gene married high school sweetheart Margaret Ann Ireland July 18, 1952, in Ft. Smith, AR. They moved to Tulsa, OK where he obtained his Bachelor’s Degree in Business and Marketing from the University of Tulsa. Margaret and Gene had two children while living in Tulsa, Deborah “Kay” and David Wesley. The Workman family moved to Del City in 1960. During his long career, Gene was business and plant manager of a variety of manufacturing facilities in Tulsa and lastly in OKC where he retired at age 75 as the oldest Xerox working employee worldwide.
Gene loved his brothers and sisters, children, grandchildren, and large extended family. Gene and wife Margaret were involved in all of their children’s activities in school and college including Del City Band Parents, concerts, piano recitals, and all sports, especially track, cross-country. For several years Gene coached son David’s little league baseball team. In retirement he enjoyed watching OU and OSU basketball, baseball and softball, and Thunder basketball. Gene loved researching family genealogy and feeding his backyard birds. He was a dog lover throughout his life including his first dog, Spot, and his last dog, Champ.
Gene was preceded in death by his parents; his wife of almost 60 years, Margaret A. Workman; an older brother, Wendell Workman; brothers- and sister-in-law Glen Looney, Pancho Rowe, and Reba Workman. He is survived by his brother, Dr. Wayne Workman and wife Betty, Springdale AR; sister Wilda Looney, Springfield, MO; sister Wayma Sue Rowe, Hot Springs AR; sister Mary Kay Scott and husband Ralph, Monett, MO; daughter, Kay Johnson, and her husband Phil, Wichita, KS, grandson Kyle Johnson and wife Danae and their two children Adrian and Elliot, Lawrence, KS; grandson Scott Johnson, Lenexa, KS; son David Workman, his wife Lisa and their son Lane, Edmond, and daughter, Emily McGraw and her husband, Thomas, OKC. He is also survived by many of his extended Workman, Ireland and Milam family that he loved dearly and many neighbors and friends in Del City, especially his friend Yvonne Wells.
Visitation will be from 4-8pm Tuesday, May 21, 2019 at Bill Eisenhour Funeral Home in Del City. Service will be held at 10:00 a.m., Wednesday, May 22, 2019 at Sunny Lane United Methodist Church, Del City. Interment to follow at Sunny Lane Cemetery, Del City.
