Gerald Glenn Owens, 87, passed away on Friday, September 25, 2015, of natural causes. He was surrounded by his loved ones. He was born in Capitol Hill to William and Mamie (Wall) Owens on May 19, 1928. He served proudly in the U. S. Army during the Korean War and received the Purple Heart for combat wounds and the Bronze Star for valor. Prior to that, he was a member of the U. S. Merchant Marines. He is survived by his son, Gary Owens from Summerdale, AL; grandson, Taylor Owens and his wife Melissa from Birmingham, AL and their daughters, Anna, Elizabeth and Charlie; his daughter, Deborah Owens from Eufaula, OK; grandson, Philip Shahan from Ashfork, Arizona; a brother, Bill Owens from Mustang, OK; a sister, Wanda Bailey from Modesto, CA; a brother-in-law, Chuck Mancine from Modesto, CA.
He was preceded in death by brother, Doyle Owens and his wife Mary, brother, Lloyd Owens and his wife Erma; three sisters, Buna Altman, Dorleen Mancine and Mae Lita Ruch.
After serving honorably for his country, he traveled the world and soon became a “Knower of many things”. His hobbies included gunsmithing and building projects. He loved working in the garden and tending to nature. While living in McLoud for 35 years, he met many friends. Because of combat injuries in the Korean War, he progressively developed blindness. Aided by his guide dog(s), he continued to get around town and meet friends and leave many smiles.
Everyone that came in contact with Gerald was left with a smile. Gerald will be greatly missed by all of us, but he would want us to know:
If you wish to opine, I will see you on the other side.
