Howard Monroe Dickens, 81, of Norman, Oklahoma, passed away peacefully surrounded by family. He was born on August 26, 1943, in Knoxville, Tennessee to Glen and Lillian Dickens. He grew up alongside his beloved brother David, with whom he shared a love of fishing and football together from a young age.
Howard proudly served his country in the United States Air Force for eight years during the Vietnam War. As a rescue serviceman, he bravely retrieved wounded soldiers from the battlefield, embodying courage, honor, and sacrifice.
In 1965, Howard married Gayle Dickens, and together they raised their family. He was a devoted husband to Gayle until her passing in 1988. In 1991, he found love again and married Susan Dickens, with whom he shared many cherished years until her passing in 2024.
A longtime resident of Norman, Howard was a loving father, grandfather, and great-grandfather. He is survived by his daughter Cynthia and her husband Matt, as well as his two grandchildren, Jason and Kiley. He also leaves behind seven great-grandchildren: Jaxon Ray, Daxxton, Dykota, Zarriah, Knox, Aurora, and baby Oakley Jo, expected soon. Howard also leaves behind nieces and nephews and all of their loving families as well as loving friends.
Howard was preceded in death by his parents, Glen and Lillian Dickens; his brother, David Dickens; his first wife, Gayle; and his second wife, Susan.
Howard found peace and joy in the country, spending time with his horses, and his dogs and cat, watching fish in his pond, and cheering on his favorite team, the Oklahoma Sooners. He will be remembered for his strength, and deep love for his family.
A private service will be held by the family to honor and celebrate his life.
